metal to metal clang is not normal. (dried out rubber bushing squeak - that's normal - but fixable) you or the dealer need to check for loose bolts in the front end - start with sway bars connectors. |

Lifted? Stock? could be bottoming out with the struts slamming it's piston before hitting the rubber bump stops. |

Oh it's completely stock. I haven't done anything to it. |

sounds like I definitely need to take it in to have them look at it... especially still under warranty. I just don't like the loaner mini van! |

check to see if the bolts holding your strut in are tight, mine came out on the rear shock and was clanking over bumps. |

If it makes a rusty creaking sound when you're going over speed bumps I have the same issue. Everyone has told me it's the front sway bar bushings. You can try to spray them down with silicone or have them replaced. It happens more durring cold weather. |

well the dealer can't duplicate the issue so I told them this morning they can drive it over to a store parking lot. I guess I'll just have them look it all over and just move on. at least they did a few other things for me while it was in too. (window regulator and new dash to replace 1 vent?) I have a loaner jeep commander for a few days but I miss my liberty. |

zexipher.. does your liberty have tube ( nerf bar ) style running boards?? If so it sounds like your having a similar problem I had . I also have an '06 limited.. when I took mine to the dealer they found it to be the rear mounting point of the nerf bars, which was the front bolt for the rear lower control arm was loose. Mine sounded like a bang that I thought was comming from the front as well. might be worth having it checked.. |

I have a loaner jeep commander for a few days but I miss my liberty. Did they really say they need to replace the entire dash to replace a vent? Did the vent break? They pop right out. Check the sway bar end links and the sway bar bushings. |

I would bet my first born that it is a loose front sway bar. If the front sway bar is loose it sounds like the front end is going to fall apart. I think it is most noticable at slower speeds but you can also hear it on bumps at higher speeds. It is a simple fix and it only takes a minute to tighten all 4 swaybar bolts. |

The dealer cannot seem to duplicate the noise. They did inspect everything but haven't actually made any changes. It sounds like, if it continues much I can just lift the car and go under there myself and try and do something? Is it a safe type of thing to do myself? I'm also going to see about my side rails as per a post above. Stupid speed bumps... |

I have been pretty busy lately, so I must have missed your story. When did you total your CRD? Are you and all involved OK? I hope all walked away OK. I can't believe this, what happened to wreck you're sweet KJ? Sorry if it ain't my business. Sorry to read in your SIG that it's totaled. Edit to add: Sorry for the thread jack. |

I got it back today and finally got rid of the massive commander I've been made to drive these past few days. It had a lot less road noise though, and by less I mean almost none. Yeah they did the other repairs, and they didn't have to replace the whole dash I guess someone inexperienced may have been trying to do so until they were informed you could just replace the vent. The dealership said they couldn't repeat the noise, I was sad, I drove it away, first speed bump I came across, no noise. So somehow, they managed to fix it, or whatever... Thanks for everyone's help. Hopefully I'll be able to help everyone else if I can learn enough! |

Had the same clunking noise in the little ladys 02 KJ ever since she purchased it. The metal noise is the swaybar bushings and they do make noise in cold weather. She put her Jeep in a ditch last month and I finally decided to take a look at her annoying noise. The left front strut was defective, had been banging since she purchased the vehicle. A number of dealers could not locate the problem. I took it to an offroad jeep speciality shop, and they found the problem right away. If your jeep is still under warrenty have the dealer replace both front struts, if not get yourself a set of topline Belkins and problem be gone. The dealers have a tech notice on this problem but for some reason they don't read them........ Roadduck Estes Park,Co |

The clunking noise over bumps could be your exhaust hitting a skid plate. Took me forever to figure it out. Sounded like it was coming from the front, but was actually at the rear. Dealership heard it, but couldn't figure it out with 3 trips in. |
