Post subject:  KJ noobie - Mud flap issues

I recently bought my wife a 04 kj limited and borowed it to take the kids fishing. I was poking around some small tracks that went down to the lake trying to find a spot I last visited 10 years ago when I came across a 10" cyclone fence and had to turn around. The ground was a little bumpy but nothing I wouldn't be able to negotiate in my old mustang to my surprise there were lots of scraping noises which turned out to be the mud flaps.

It seems Aussie KJ's came out with rediculously long (4" off the ground)mud flaps of a pretty hard plasitic these things will have to go but I'll need to replace it with something that looks good and fullfils the legal requirement to have rear mud flaps what can you folks recomend in the way of trail friendly mudflaps.

thanks

You have to have mud flaps on a stock vehicle? :? I would either modify what you have, maybe shortening them up or go w/ a flexible rubber version or combo of the two. I have seen very few KJ's w/ mud flaps that were not the factory style ones.

I took mine off within the 1st week of getting it (new), replaced them with the short ones at the dealer. They were about $120 for the pair (i think), better than tickets from the fun police.

Old pic but you can still see them.

Does the front ones prevent mud from reaching the doors during normal driving (not serious off-road, maybe gravel roads).

Post subject:  go with the "heavy duty"

I got the "Heavy Duty" ones from Mopar because they looked more like what should be on a truck than on a grocery-getter:

Mostly, I didn't want crap thrown up onto the body. The rubber is thick but pliable. I've backed up against tall curbs with no ill effects.

The molded mup flaps do fine offroad unless you plan on getting into alot of rocks. I usually take mine off before offroading if I know Im going to be rock crawling.

I paid $80 for all four. They do ok at keeping rocks and mud off the sides but the flares on the back doors still get hit alittle. Dont think its going to keep mud off the Jeep if you go bogging b/c it wont.

I don't use mud flaps on the front, I think my rubber would rip them off when at full stuff & 3/4 turn.

I got the molded mud flaps for no ther reason then I don't want to through stone into somebodys windsheild. I have always hated that, more of trying to not be part of the problem. Yes it's still a Jeep but just trying to hurt anybody else because more times then not they don't even know they have damaged your ride and drive on down the road entirely clueless

Ohh, I would never let them drive along without knowing what happened, trust me.

That sort of the same problem I face here in Denver, But with Lights I'ld love to mount a set on the cowl between the hood and the windshield. But they are illeagal, but if I mount spot lights on the pillars like police cruisers it's perfectly leagal  :? . I have the typeof luck that if I did install I'd get nailed with in 2 blocks  . But back to the subject I think the molded factory flaps will work fine and not give you any problems. I have them and in our blizzards last year with deep snow they caused no problems. What leagal in one area could be a hanging offence in another. Go Figure
