Post subject:  winch & lift

hi!
would i need to lift the kj at the front if i put a 30kg winch on. how much & would an OTT be ok? i will be installing a 2inch lift on the kj (springs) but could raise a little more with an OTT spacer at the front if need be. any suggestions of a manufacturer of a suitable spacer to counter the winch wieght?
thanks
jonathan

Hi, Jonathan. When you add a good lift, you typically get increased ride-height AND a higher spring rate (thicker wire which is harder to compress and can carry more weight) and shocks that have valving and travel to match the springs. If you add a simple spacer lift and a winch, your stock springs will simply be more compressed by the weight of the vehicle and be less able to deal with bumps and such.

Several manufacturers make heavy-duty lifts designed to handle greater weight at the front end. I didn't catch if you had a petrol or diesel KJ, but there's a substantial difference in engine weight there as well. If you just want to be able to use a winch and not raise your jeep a whole lot, you should probably check out an OME (Old Man Emu) complete system. It will have shocks and springs matched that can handle the added kg's of your winch.

The OTT lifts cause a great deal of trouble - if you use these - make sure you extend the bumpstops to prevent the front struts from going to max compression - a single cycle of max wheel travel without a bumpstop can damage the strut.

if you can only afford a spacer - then the Daystar under spring spacer are better

however the best is a good spring lift - and a set of OME springs only would be much better and not much more expensive.
