Post subject:  Rusty's Offroad Coil Suspension Lift....?

I tried to find this answer with the search, but didn't find anything.

My Liberty is a 2007 Sport 4x4 and I'm wondering: PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE RUSTY'S LIFT KIT....

After installing the Rusty's Coil Suspension Lift (Not Spacer Lift, but the one that is $465.00):

http://rustysoffroad.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=rustys&Product_Code=RK-250A-KJ&Category_Code=sus_kj_kit

Are there any issues of the ball joints coming into contact with the coil springs? Or does that only happen with lifts over 3 inches?

Trying to decide if this is the route I want to go.

You will not have any UBJC unless you do a clevis lift and add to many nuts. :)

You wont need to worry about the upper ball joints contacting the springs with Rusty's lift without modification to the lift.

Also, the front will be a little bit lower then the back with that lift in its normal, retail form. Alot of people add a little bit of clevis lift to the front and sometimes extra coil isolator pads to the rear to level it out and add a little more height. This is when you need to watch the upper ball joints and might have to get the JBA upper arms to correct that. You'd also run into a problem where your suspension will be at a limit in that it cannot be properly aligned anymore. JBA arms would correct that as well.

Also, the rear shocks in the kit are not the best. The main problem is the fit of the upper mount. The shock will be a little bit loose in the mount and kind of clunk around. You can fix that my adding some sort of shim in there and cranking down on the bolt until the smashes it together. Or, just get some better shocks...

Oh, and the front springs wont be heavy enough to run any permanent load on the front such as a steel bumper or a winch. If you dont have that, they're fine though.

All in all, I think its a very good kit for its price! :D

what would happen if I wanted to run a winch on the front....Not a steel Bumper....but maybe a front hitch and a winch attachment?

well, i personally love the idea of a front hitch and winch attachment because you dont have to have it on there all the time, and you can use it on the back if you need to. for periodic, removable winch use, the rusty's will be just fine. you just dont want to have it on there ALL THE TIME because the springs will sag over time.

So you think it would be ok, if I don't leave the winch on there for a long period of time.

How much would it sag with a ARB Front bumper or something like it, with the winch installed....

i dont know how much or how long it would take. someone else is gonna have to chime in on that one.

yep! you wouldnt want to leave it on there using a front hitch setup anyway because it sticks out on the front of the bumper. its not neat and tidy like a bumper-top install or a behind-the-bumper install.

A LOT, you need OME HD fron spring for ARB with the winch. Rustys wasnt desinged for that much weight in the front. The spring rating on it is too low.

I haven't tried the Rusty's lift - however the numbers he had on his web were 310lbs/in
That's around the level of the OME soft springs - if you want ARB & Winch - do the OME heavy duties - gets about 400lb/inch

and if I remember correctly - you can shop around and get full OME for not too much more than the Rusty's.

Thanks for all the info. I'll keep researching.

I will not say too much
but Simon Says....Rustys is a good kit except for the rear shocks, have to have a bunch of washers to make them even close to working, still not sure why he sells shocks that dont work :? :? :? but IF YOU ARE even considering going with a bumper, and / or hitch and winch later on , go with the OMEs You can shop around for all the parts and be in the same price range as Rustys.

i still say hitch and winch doesnt require heavier springs. but it wouldnt hurt anything. this is also not based on experience as i do not have a hitch and winch so... take that for what its worth.

Would having the Heavy Duty OME springs on the front hurt anything, since I wouldn't be adding a winch and bumper for some time (maybe a year). I am doing this all on a budget (SMALL BUDGET). I didn't know if the HD springs would make the front sit too high...and cause Ball Joint or CV Joint problems.

I had 3 clevis rings on my Rusty's lift. When I installed JBA's A-Arms, both of my upper balljoints had a hole worn in them. I was actually making them talk, it was quite sad.

I have OME HDs in the front with NO ARB and NO Winch and with 2 ring clevis and everything is fine. If you thinking about getting ARB and winch in the front go ahead and get some OME HDs. I have both OME HDs in the front and in the rear and with 2 ring clevis in the front it sits about even and I love it.

It would not set too high with the HDs and even with a clevis, I installed my OME HDs on a Friday evening and left for Orlando at 6 the next morning, 2600 miles later back home and put the ARB on , no problems at all with it like that, except smiling all the way as I passed other (lower) KJs

I did the Rustys full coil last summer. Everything was great (except the rear shocks) until I did the ARB a couple months later. Its not terrible now but just not ideal. My recommendation for EVERYONE is to do the OME927's up front in case you ever get a new bumper...and lets be honest, once you lift and get bigger tires the bumper is just the next step. You cant stop once you start.
Also with the Rustys kit please please dont bother installing the rear shocks they give you. Just order the Rancho 17004's and forget about it. The ones that come with the Rustys kit are ok internally but the form factor (upper mount) isnt the correct width for the mount on the Jeep. You will have to add some washers and compress the mount to get it tight. Then over time you will have to retighten and always be aware of it. Just spend the extra $$$ up front or at least plan on replacing them in short order.
