So I've been thinking about getting some onboard air. With all the work on the KJ i've been doing lately, it would be good to have air!!! I would really like a compressor I can use in a garage, but I won't have a a garage, so it looks like onboard is the way to go. I'd like to use the unit to run impacts and wrenches. Inflating tires is not a major concern.

Don't know much about this stuff though. Any models, size, hookup, things I should be looking for??? Oh, and a $600 Warn unit is out of the question.

I know some people have done this, any info is good info.

His is a York AC compressor setup. Not going to say it can't be done on a KJ but I will say good luck. I have an electric ARB compressor which might not be enough to run power tools but is for my ARB lockers and airing up if needed. You might want ot consider a Co2 setup which can be regulated to run air tools if needed. I have pics of my setup in the SFA section on my KJ.

the problem you will run into it CFM. or cubic feet per minute. Most impact wrenches can be pretty big CFM hogs and thus the little ARB compressors will be WAY underpowered.

Any air tool will require a certian CFM. Just inflating tires is not a huge issue. it will take as long as it takes. But the CFM is what is needed. Good luck finding a small well made High CFM unit. Much less for a good price. you might look into a hydralic unit, like Don's it think. I know you can get those for CJ's and YJ's. Not sure you can get one to fit in a KJ.

Yea I was thinking CFM might be an issue, wuold need a good compressor for that. Wiring is something i'm not to sure of either....I may just have to get a small garage unit and a really really long extension cord.

Porter Cable makes the little pancake models that are great for nail guns and air wrenches. But for an impact it is a little underpowered.

I have used my 150 psi pancake model with a power inverter in my KJ before while i was helping a friend nail up some new fence boards. Worked pretty well. just kept the KJ running.

Your CFM is a function of how fast the compressor can cycle ALNOG with the tank capacity. That storage tank is where the air to run the impact wrenches comes from and then the pump's speed at replenishing that capacity. If it runs out faster than the pump can fill it then you have underpower issues and the impact will run just not at a constant rate.

just found this side on making your own onboard CO2...interesting, just have to make sure your are filled up before hitting the trails

The Power Tank seems cool too, but I bet its expensive

The PowerTank regulator is what your paying for,and in my opinion well worth it when the other regulators freeze up after airing up 2 tires.I love my PowerTank.

do you mind sharing how much you paid for it...and size tank?

Sun performance, VIAIR, and OASISmfg are some good brands to look into. There's a rover place up in maine (EastCoastRovers) that does a lot of pictoral descriptions of their work and they often add "on-board-air". You can get some good ideas there.

The best setup I've seen is the type where you convert an AC compressor into an on-board air system but it may take a bit of skill to fabricate.

My friends use a variety of on-board air systems from modified AC compressors, compressed air cylinders and even 120VAC shop compressor running off of a 750W inverter. Air "pigs" might work for airing up a single tire but not four.

I use a 12V DC air compressor and a the tank from a shop compressor.

I can air up pretty quick and its portable. I can easily carry it to the next Jeep.

CO2 is the best trail air you can get
search the net and eBay you can get a 10# bottle for ~$100 or so
go to a local welding supply shop and get a 0-200 psi high volume oxygen regulator for a cutting torch
then get a new nipple and fitting for CO2
I got my set up like that for about $80 or so
I know others have tried with cheeper units like mine and they do freeze up after 2 tires but I can do all 4 tires
in fact I can remove and install 4 tires with an impact ,rotate, and no freeze up
off of 1 20# unit I can probably do 4 rotation of 4 tires with a middle of the road impact
I also have a 5# unit that a bring when I think my 20# unit is getting low

My setup definitely will not work on a KJ with any off the shelf parts. I have a bracket manufactured by Kilby, and he does not make one for the KJ.

That's not to say that it isn't possible, but you would have to fabricate a bracket after you find a good spot with enuf room, figure out the belt routing, and measure the proper length for the belt. In my setup, the Compressor becomes the belt tensioner as well, as installing requires removal of the stock spring loaded tensioner.

I will say that it blows away my CO2 setup that I had previously. I had the Powertank regulator, and still had freezeup issues in the cooler months. It worked great in the summer, but in the fall and winter it would freeze after 2 tires or so. I also ended up having to get a fill after every trip because I was generous and let everyone air up with it. Now I have an unlimited source of air with plenty of CFM to do whatever I need to with it. The only downside is my engine has to be running to be able to use it.

hmmmmmmmmm interesting stuff. I think I'll def go the CO2 route, maybe start buying parts slowly. Very cool stuff though.
