Post subject:  Mopar paint sold in a spray can

For those of you who may not know, I have found a few websites that carry some of the Mopar paint colors in a spray can. My factory paint is (Inferno Red Crystal Pearl Coat) which is difficult to match. Now I can paint my sliders and gas tank skid plate to match my wife’s KJ. She’s happy! :D

Also any good paint shop can match your paint and put it in a spray can, actually even a good body shop with a way to mix paint can. Most have a light/camera sort of machine that they use to take a picture of your paint it tells them the exact mix and have it to you in a matter of minutes. Did this even with one of my Harleys when they came out with pearl white, Harley dealer couldnt even get the paint , went to a buddy of mine and three minutes later had the paint code and was mixing it, Way cheaper than the dealership as well

Great info Tom, I didn’t know it was that simple. Okay, I need some help. I have a new gas tank skid with the factory black paint. What type of sandpaper do I need to use to rough it so my paint will adhere? Do I need to take the paint completely off, or just sand enough to rough it? Will I need to use some type of rust inhibitor as a primer before I spray paint it? I think the skink super sliders come sandblasted…………….or at least I think so……………………I might have to ask Marty to be sure. Anyway, is there some type of spray enamel or clear coat that I can use to protect the spray paint? I’m a little L.O.S.T.

you dont have to really sand through the excisting paint you just want to rough it up enough for the paint to adhere. The scuff pads work well for this, I always primer just to be sure, then paint

Does Wal-Mart carry the paint prep scuff pads? I was thinking that 3M or Scotch Brite made something like that and I was thinking that they are stocked in the automotive section of Wal-Mart.

Post subject:  Spray can size?

How big is a spray can? I want to paint my rock rails darker to match my graphite wheels. Do you think one spray can will be enough?

These guys are more pricy then the OEM stuff, and you say the OEM stuff is overpriced?

OEM paint(then again any automotive paint worth a darn) is not cheap by any means,PPG and Glasurit are among the best,Dupont sucks and looks like poo.I used Glasurit on my KJ,the same stuff Ferrari,Lamborghini,BMW,and other high end vehicles come with from the factory.

I've always used www.paintscratch.com. You can get it in a pen, bottle, spray, gallon, etc. I've used them for metallic colors on my old Pontiac and it was fantastic quality. They make it to order so you can be sure it isn't sitting on a shelf for 2 years.

Doesn't over time the paint fades on your vehicle particularly Red? To see, just open the door and look at the door jam and compare to the exposed body in the sun.

With that in mind, the new spray may be alittle off in contrast so I would think a body shop/paint place may be better able to match your 'aged' paint.

Yes after time the painte will fade that has to be taken intio account, also there are about 20-50 variances per color straight from the factory, depends on how the paint was mixed that day.And then there are mulitude of shades of the same color,it would blow your mind on how many different whites and blacks(the colors, not poeple) there are, white is just not white like most think as is other colors. The dark and light kacki is one of the worst for the amount of different versions.

I would think that adding a clear coat would also cause a color to appear more glossy and sharp whereas paint without clear coat may appear less glossy or dull in contrast. Which leads me to my next questions. Is there some type of protecting clear coat that I can spray on my sliders and gas tank skid to help protect the paint??? And Troy, where did you buy your grip tape that you have on your sliders?

The OEM paint is a 2 stage paint, the first stage is the color and it's dull, the 2nd coat is the clear coat to give it shine. The older vehicles(I beleived they stopped in the mid '90's) used a single stage paint, the base and clear was mixed together,a little duller but still shined somewhat.I sprayed my KJ with a tri-coat paint,it has a solid color base coat,a translucent top coat, and then the clear coat.

The touch up paint, brushed on or spray, is a single stage paint.Adding a clear wouldn't really help and all those spray can clears are junk anyway. If you want a perfect match and protection of that color the parts need to be painted like your Jeep was.Kinda pointless for skids since they will be used at one point in time or another if you want to wheel.A good single stage spray will look pretty good and will be easily touched up.

I don't run the grip tape anymore, kept ruining my paints, but I bought it at a Menards(like a Home Depot) and have seen it a Home Depot,it's the 2" wide roll that is about 15' long.
