How have you compensated for the limited up-travel due to the newly curved arms?

After hanging the arms in the pocket, I noticed that there will be contact with the front pocket about two or three inches before the arm will contact the bumpstop.

I know that in the past some would cut the bottom of the pocket to allow for full down travel. But it doesn’t look like the upper portions of the pocket can be cut in the same way; the frame is in the way.

I’d like to maintain full suspension travel, so aside from extended bumpstops, what are some of you all doing to fix this?

I'm sure you've seen this already, but here's what jeepinbyal has on their site:
http://jeepinbyal.com/A-arm_mounting_pockets.aspx

Doesnt go into much detail, so I dont think this really helps you out too much. I'm going to be getting these soon, so I'm interested to see what the solution is!

It will be interesting to see what you come up with as I was wondering the same after looking at them, the 5s look like they will work great on 4/6 inch lifts but maybe not so much on 2.5 or 3 inch,of course have not seen any up close but looking at the pictures they look like it could be a problem ?? have you mounted them yet or have any pictures

the bottoms you can take out some but I dont see where on the top you can remove that much, but then again having not seen them up close the curve may not be as much as it appears to be

Got any pics meh-kick? If thats the case then its going to make some awful noises going down the road. The amount of force those pockets and bushings will under-go when you hit a big dip or hole will be great... Which could damage those mounts for that a-arm.

Im amazed that JBA didnt catch something like that if thats the case. :?

Are you using the stock bump stops? And if you are not, the strut will most likely stop the upward travel before the arm hits. The only way you can test this is to fully compress the spring, which is a lot of fun, and see if the arm hits. The upwards travel is limited by the strut lenght and gaps between the coil loops.

The only time that I think it will be an issue is when a front wheel needs to stuff fully. So far, a few potholes and rough roads haven't scared me yet. I'm having an alignment done today and some wheeling tomorrow.

If I can find time to pull one apart, I'll post some pics of what I mean. Perhaps I can find a chunk of concrete to twist up on.

So what I have read here and I thin I understand but correct me if I am wrong,
The pockets at the bottom and top is it covered with the plastic liner? or is it metal?

May be that we will need the extended bump stops with the Gen5 Aarms.
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... +extension
Tera Flex, 801-713-3314, for a set of the extended bump stops are (may still be) $16.24 each + shipping, and the part # is 001903200.

Is this the case?

The pics on his website look pretty straight-forward (that being said, I haven't looked under my Jeep after seeing them). The top looks like it can be cut similar to the bottom, as in there isn't much behind it.
There's probably no way around the cutting. It makes more sense to design the arm to fit perfectly with the suspension geometry than to get around it's mounting-point restrictions. He should have more pics, like from the engine bay and of how exactly he did it...dremel? grinder? Sawzall?

You were right Jeepster, I did notice it more today while heading toward the alignment shop. I need to make some adjustments to the front pocket, but don't know how safe it is to cut into it in order to push it back some. (The top doesn't have a lip like the bottom does)

I'll most definitely need to pick up a pair of extended bumpstops as well.

What tools would one use to cut out the bottom part of the pockets?

Author:  Joe Jeeper [ Fri May 02, 2008 9:09 pm ]
Post subject:  Pockets

There's little on the top of the pocket to take off with a dremel tool or die grinder. After wheelin' with my sway bar disconnected I can't see where the top of the A arm hit at all on the pocket?

Yeah I have the stock bumpstops.

What's happening is that because of the new down curve of the arm eliminates the need to cut the bottom of the pocket (suspension can fully drop), but now upon compression, the upper pocket gets slammed.

I've got two nicks on the arm already just from parking lot manuvers. I'll be using an angle grinder (when I find one) to gently massage the top of the pocket. I don't believe that part of the body is structural.

When you cut into the packets, is this making that area of the jeep weaker?

Yes it can, really can if you cut a spotweld out, less material=less strength.

After looking at his yesterday there is not much at all that can be removed from the top, with out it becoming weaker, or at least I would not want to. . They will be great for the 4/6 inch lifts! But on 2 to 3 inch lift the new design is great for the bottom hitting but now will hit at the top and Yes it does big time. More thought into making them ????????? , are we up to Gen 6 Now ????

I checked mine yesterday while doing the brakes and yes, they do hit. Haven't been off roading either. :( With the a arms on, the only way to get up there would be to use a die grinder or dremel. IF you do it without the a arms installed, i'd imagine that a grinder would work.

I guess some new bump stops are in order.

You can use the Gen IVs but you'll still need to cut the bottom of the pockets.

I'll be ordering the Tereflex bumpstops tomorrow. I'll see if that's enough to keep the arm from contacting the top of the pocket. If not I'll be opening up the pocket with a grinder.
