| Post subject: | My KJ. HELP please. |
So Ok. I bought my 05 Sport like two months ago. I haven't driven it as much cause I have been underway (I'm in the navy) a month from those two months. So last month my buddies dad was driving it. He said that he heard the transmission starting to slip. (his dad is a mechanic). See the thing is I'm not a mechanic or a car person. I don't hear or feel it doing nothing different. the only i hear it do is every time i go from parking to drive or from reverse to drive just hear a little "sound" that goes of coming from underneath. it could be nothing. it could be what he is saying but .. i don't want to get stuck in the middle of the road because i didn't checked out what friends dad said. thats the first thing i have going on with my KJ. Any help with it would be awesome. what can i do, what to check and so on ... |

metal parts that have no paint or any coating of anykind will have some rust on them, nothing to worry about. Normal on most everyones except jeepjepsters |

First; How many miles are on it? Do you know if the regular maintenance has been done to it, regular oil/transmission etc. ? One of the first things I always do when buying a used one is go clear through it and change out everything so I know its been done. Also if its been sitting for a while and then someone jumps in and takes off it may "seem" to slip some just due to everything not being well lubed up. I would take and have it checked out real well by a good local mechanic since you don't have a lot of experience in doing work for yourself. Tom |

Any time you buy a used vehicle you have no idea what you are getting as far as the fluids and oils are concerned. It is a great idea to have everything changed out so that You will then know what is in your Jeep and when it was last changed. I guarantee that we, this forum, can walk you through doing all of your own maintenance and pretty much everyone here will encourage you to do so. You will learn a lot about your Jeep by just changing your own fluids and it is valuable info to know. As for the rust, don't worry. It is only surface rust and shouldn't negatively effect anything as long as it isn't rusting past any seals anywhere. (which would show up as leaks anyway) BTW, Welcome! |

yeah. well i'm would like to learn. he its always good to learn about the things you own specially if it takes you to work everyday and to see your family on the weekends. but yeah, a walk through would be nice. we have a autoshop on base. with all the tools and cool stuff found in the mechanic shop. so getting to the place its not the problem it just knowing what to do and what to do with it. aw thanks for the welcome. thanks for the help so far. its been good and uplifting. my sister got in a car accident yesterday and i had to get off work and drive 200m to go see her and in my mind i kept thinking of what he said and the slipping.. know i feel better and i have the week off, so i have to time to work with that. |

Anything you need just ask, someone on here will know the "right" way to do it and walk you through it. No time like the present to start learning how to do it on your own! Tom |

for a used vehicle - you need to check front and rear diff, transfer case, transmission (oh yeah and engine) diffs and transfer case are the unscrew a fill hole and check with finger tip, engine needs to be cold, tranny warm - idling in park although I'm back to the original comment "heard the transmission starting to slip" - what does that mean? - strange noise while driving? while stopped? or a whinning sound? grinding? personally any CRD that's had the F37 will sound like it's slipping because the stall speed is too high - (don't know about gassers) so is he talking about engine speed relative to vehicle speed? - that really should be the definition of slip |

Liberty's and pretty much the entire automatic Jeep line uses an electronic shifter. My Jeep always makes an electric "solenoid" sound first before going from park to drive or reverse. |

Slip on manual transmissions - mean the clutch is dying - i.e. you're driving in a straight line - rev the engine and the vehicle gradually catches up to the engine speed - that's slip on an automatic - that's build into the torque converter until it locks - once it locks - engine speed should stay proportional to vehicle speed. so - I tend to think that the message was lost in the relay - or he's not familiar with Jeeps - I mean my Jeep makes more and different 'normal' noises than my Landcruiser did - but that's not a problem - it's normal for the Jeep. I'd still recommend checking /changing all fluids - and the air filter - it's used - you don't know what was done before -and when you drive - just be listening for what's normal. |

Both my Jeeps have the 42rle tranny and both make a soliniod sound when shifting. It worried me on the Rubi at first, but the Rubi has 55,000 hard miles on it and the Libby has 43,000 miles with out any problems. As far as the fliuds, I wouldn't just check them I would change them out. My Rubi has been sitting for a while during some work I have been doing, so I just went ahead and changed every thing but the tranny fliud, that I will have a power flush done. Anyway, its better to start off fresh, then to just check the levels, that way you KNOW the proper fliuds are in it. |
