I found this on Harbor Freight. It plugs into the receiver and costs $10. RECEIVER TOW HOOK
What do you all think? Currently we're using a 2" drop ball mount turned upside down with a D-ring in it. |

I use one, and I transfer it from the rear to the front hitch, depending on how I'm stuck. So far, so good. |

Do it mate, if I can offer any advice to anyone it would be never recover from a tow ball. It's just not worth it, last thing you want is a tow ball flying at you when it snaps off. Your only looking for trouble using that to recover, your much safer putting the strap into the hitch and poping the pin into place. Nice find on the recovery hook, I've got a similar one to that. |

Far as I can see it's not that the tow ball can come off, but that the strap end can slip off the ball (nice round surface) and then you're tow vehicle is gunning forward and you're still stranded. I normally have a hook in the front receiver and a D-shackle with my strap attached in the rear, that way if I need to get a tug they just throw it over the hook and if I need to pull someone I just grab the strap out of the back thru the flip-glass opening. |

he's not talking about the tow strap coming off the ball, or the ball coming loose; he's talking about the ball breaking at the neck and going flying. like he said, not worth the risk. if you are using a ball, you might as well be using chains or a tow strap with a metal hook! |

Yep Not that I disagree with ya' all but I too have wondered what makes the ball less likely to break than say the weld on that tow hook or even the metal of the hook itself? I mean if the ball is expected to pull a 5K trailer for example, why is it anymore likely to snap during a recovery than a hook? |

if you are using a ball, you might as well be using chains or a tow strap with a metal hook! Speaking of tow straps with hooks... If I have a strap with hooks, Can I just hacksaw the hook off and still use the strap or is the loop designed differently on a hook strap and a loop strap? |

Speaking of tow straps with hooks... If I have a strap with hooks, Can I just hacksaw the hook off and still use the strap or is the loop designed differently on a hook strap and a loop strap? Yep cut off the hooks and use the loops NEVER use a ball to recover Cheep hooks are going to be just that CHEEP so DON'T USE THEM I know that I preach some times about how important safe recovery is but I have seen stuff break and it CAN KILL YOU one more time IT CAN KILL YOU so dont piss around with cheep crap if you plan to use it get good hooks and tow points The OE front hooks are great and made to do their job and they do it well The OE rear hook is fine just as the hitch is good strap over the top of hitch ,loop around receiver, and out to stuck or unstuck rig from the bottom if you dont get that then the hitch pin through the strap works good as well or a receiver mounted shackle is an acceptable choice NEVER use a shackle to attach 2 straps together but use a good wooden plank or pole ,if you do it right you will not break a hickory mall handle ,this is what I use and it is all I will allow to be used when I am guiding |

what would be so bad in using a shackle to attatch two straps? I was thinking of buying another strap so I could do that, so when I need to pull someone out of the ditch I dont have to get in the ditch also |

I was thinking of buying another strap so I could do that, so when I need to pull someone out of the ditch I dont have to get in the ditch also Snatch straps snap/break, it happens all the time and they don't last for ever. Imagine your snatching with 2 snatch straps joined by a shackle and one of the snatch straps break. Where do you think the shackle is going to go, it will go bloody fast at one of the 2 cars in the recovery. (bad advice removed Quote: jeremesh

Don't know about that, I'd say not as it's probably for towing not recovery. You should check what it's rated to then decide if its worth it. |

Thinking more about that, I'd probably not use anything to join two snatch straps. I'd loop them together, that way no missiles if it breaks |
