Hi all

I have a 2002 3.7 with selec trac. Problem is intermittent and relates to shifting from 2WD through 4PT into 4FT. Sometimes the case seems to be stuck in 4PT mode even though the dash indicator says FT and the lever is in the right position for full time. The tyres rub on the pavement on hard turns. The problem seems to persist for a few minutes despite slow reversing and forward motion and left right turning until there is a sudden 'clunk' and the wheels free up!

Same problem occasionally happens in reverse...4FT through 4PT into 2WD. No problems with low ratio position at all.

Its a bit disconcerting and I want to know if this is a major problem or a simple fix?

BTW I tend to shift whilst moving forward at 2-3mph in a car park then reverse a bit then forward again to check its all engaged correctly

Any ideas?? It really is a bit disconcerting

Rob

When was the last time you serviced the TC? It sounds like one of the clutch packs in the TC is getting stuck. There is a clutch pack that is closed in 4-PT when the front and rear are tied together and is open in 4-FT allowing the differential in the TC to be open (so front and rear can rotate at different speeds).

Not sure...I have it serviced at a Jeep dealer at the regular service intervals in the manual. Its done 51600 miles now..next service at 52500. Should I ask them to lool at the TC? Is at worth getting them to change the clutch pack anyway? Any idea how much this would cost?

Cheers

Hey Rob,

I have found that if you are in drive the transfer case will not shift into 4wd low. I have also found it hard at times, but not impossible to shift from p/t to f/t . However I have never tried it in reverse or shifting on the fly as they say while in drive. I will always put the auto tranny (or manual to think of it) into neutral before shifting into any 4 wd gear. Something I have been doing with all my 4 wd vehicles over the last 20+ years.

Al

mine does the same thing. You just need to give it more time to go into full time before you turn. Ive found that if you give it some gas and get moving, let off the gas and put it into N then back to D and mine usually goes into what ever i need it to. Mine always gets stuck in PT going back to 2wd from Full time.

This is a common issue with the selec trac. You will have better success going between the various HIGH gears (2WD, 4PART TIME, 4 FULL TIME) if you are going more than 2-3 MPH. That speed (and Neutral) is suggested for going in/out of 4LO only. For high shifts, get moving.

Now here's the best tip: if you didn't come out of 4WD (stuck in Part Time) then pull it back in to FULL TIME 4WD until you get moving and going in a straight line. THEN you can go back into 2WD without a clunk.

I had this issue all the time when I would come home in 4WD FULL TIME and park in the garage. Next morning, it was dry and I tried to put it into 2WD and hten back out of the garage. NOT GOOD. Others had same issues and we all determined that the above described method is best fix.

The problem is that the fork used to engage out 242 transfer case is spring loaded and if it doesn't have the right circumstances, it won't release. the driveline is "loaded up" on it and it won't release.

That's also why it's suggested that after you make the shift, you let off and on the gas lightly.
