| Post subject: | Air Flow Snorkel: My experiences **UPDATE** |
On Saturday, I installed my airflow snorkel. I do have some advice for anyone thinking of doing this or paying someone else to do it. The US distributor offers a jig for a $75 deposit. It's the snorkel cross-sectioned so you know where the holes go. I highly recommend this investment (you'll get your money back when it's returned) because the outer template is off. I lined up the template with the edge off the fender, I cut the 3" hole and then I centered the jig over the 3" hole and screwed the jig to the fender. Now I had pilot holes to drill and I know they would line up with the snorkel. The holes that were off the most (on the template) were the two nearest the antenna and the last one on the opposite side. All is well with the jig! You'll need an airsaw to do the rest of the holes. You'll need to cut two more holes into two more layers of metal. The middle template is fine but my kit was missing the inner template so it was throw the dice time. My airbox was different than the Australian one in the instructions. so the "blocking plate" was useless to me; I had to make my own. Also, the airbox pictured has smooth sides, mine is ribbed like a trojan but for no one's pleasure in this case. I had to cut the ribs off to attach the supplied air inlet. Once the snorkel is attached to the fender, the fender will not go on as easily as it came off. A buddy's help comes in handy at this point. My impression: When I started up the engine, I noticed an immediate CEL My question: I was thinking of putting a filter into the snorkel tube up by the hat. I was thinking of doing this mostly to keep large bits of debris from falling down the tube. Does anyone know of a cleanable filter that would fit into a 3" diameter pipe? I hope this info helps someone and I appreciate anyone's input in my "pre-filter" idea. |

I could get a pic. Once the hat is removed, it's just a round tube. I believe it's 3" diameter, I measure it to be sure. I was thinking that I could put rivets into the tube to give the filter something to sit on. |

I'm picturing a pre-filter wrap from a small cone filter over the opening. That would allow air in but no bugs, small birds, etc. (Don't forget the Amsoil Ea air filter in the air box too!!) |

Replacing the filter in the air box with an Amsoil is the plan. Just give me the details on how to order one. ga A guy in my Jeep club has one on his TJ snorkel and recommended it. He said he ordered it from Land Rover, but I don't see it on the list (or snorkels for that matter) of accessories available through Land Rover's website. |

If you want a prefilter to keep bugs and what not from going down the tube, it a real cheap and easily replaceable solution. Get some cheap stockings/thigh highs/panty hose/whatever, take the inlet off, put the stocking over it, cut off excess, put inlet back on. Give that a shot. these work great for cold air cone filters as well, just spray them with some scotchguard and you have a water resistant prefilter. |

I thought about using speaker grill material in the same way Marty. I see that 4wheel parts sells these from ARB: http://www.4wheelparts.com/Lights-Lighting-Accessories/Safari-Snorkel.aspx?t_c=14&t_s=70&t_pt=5777&t_pl=491&t_pn=ARBPBH000237 Not sure how they look in real life, I am sure they work well. They just seem tupperwareish in appearance/ |

You can actually buy a Pre-filter sock, specially designed for exactly that purpose. It's washable foam. I know "Fouros" and "Team JaG" have them on theirs. |

OK, I tracked the MPG's since the snorkel install. After 1 week and half a tank it seemed to have zero impact on economy. I did take her out to a place in NW Palm Beach County to try out the snorkel in real life. When I got home the airbox was clean and dry. Usually is full of dust that turns into concrete when mixed with the bits of water that came from driving around in the rain. It rained the entire way home 1 1/2 hrs. I am not sure why the snorkel did not suck in any rain but the stock intake would have been good for a tiny bit of water. Here's a vid of my first test water hole. Ignore my stammering at the end. http://www.flickr.com/photos/wlirio/2582993202/in/set-72157605637603477/ |

Be aware that just adding a snorkel does not mean you can go through deeper water, many, many, and many other things need to be done first to truely deep water forde. Looking good there JL! It sure does add to the look on a KJ. |

well I know the breathers need to be extended and I know there are some computer gizmos that are low in the vehicle. Some of the guys here in FL have put dielectric (spelling?) grease in all their electrical connections. It seems that changing the gear oils is standard practice but I have not heard anything else discussed. |

KJ go without having to worry about any "leaking." B/c it is flooding here in Oklahoma, again, and gotta go through about 1-2 feet of water to get home! |
