Post subject:  CO2 Powered Impact Wrench Questions

So what kind of impact wrench do you guys use with your CO2 systems? I saw an ad in Harbor Freight for one on sale for $20. It only has 260 ft lbs of torque, 7000 rpm no load speed, air requirement of 4.5 CFM @ 90 psi, no torque control settings, 1/2" size, and single hammer mechanism. Should I bother with this unit? My CO2 system is set at 150 psi. How much CO2 will it use to take a tire off or put one on? It is only $20, but if it is useless, then why bother right. Thanks.

I have used my IngersolRand Titanium impacts with my PowerTank, they needed more then 150psi to run right with CO2,and alot of tool oil.Non PowerTank CO2 setups may not power impacts or other air tools very good from my experiance with needing higher psi that was needed from my PowerTank. It's not so much the PSI but the CFM for most air tools to work properly.

I dont know about that one but I use a craftsman that I got for like $75
it has about the same torque and with 20# CO2 I can take off and install 8 tires with "juice" left over
I have a high volume Oxygen regulator that I use
Got it from a welding supply house with a replacement nipple
It was made to be used on computer controlled rigs that cut through 2" plate so it flows to say the least
It has never froze up even when using an air ratchet or filling 8 tires ,lots of air for a long time

I would say get it and try it out
if it does not work then just bring it back and take a store credit

Well, I bought it. I figured 20 was a good deal so what the heck. I used it on my spare and it seemed to work OK. My only real concern is that it seems to use a lot of my CO2. Not sure if it is worth it to keep it for on the trail use and use up all my air when I might need it for tire filling at the end of the trail. Any suggestions?

I use this for the trail and when I'm not near a air compressor.......

Plenty strong enough for most jobs I need it to do,well worth the money,I had a Snapon 18v cordless and the Milwaukee 28v cordless blows it away hands down.I keep my CO2 tank for airing up my tires.

That is what I am worried about. Running out of air for tires. I have this drill http://www.dewalt.com//ProductImages/PC ... 20KA_1.jpg It is a beast and a half. Big though, which is another bonus of the small air wrench. So I don't know if I want to keep the air or drag the big Dewalt along the trail. :?

I don't think that drill will take your lugs off though.

you can test it real easy

weigh your CO2 on the bathroom scale ,no regulator or hose just the tank, and record the weight
Then go out side and remove and reinstall 5 lug nuts ,1 on each wheel and the first wheel twice
Remove all hoses and regulator and reweigh the bottle
The weight difference is how much CO2 you used

I am betting it will use 1 LB or less

I use a CH at 150 ,the only difference is I have onboard Nitrogen instead of CO2, CO2 as we all know is liquid it has a tendancy to destroy o rings in power tools, it also goes thru all sorts of changes with temperature. I can also use it as a backup for my Lockers if my compressor goes down.
