I got talked into running in a local mudbog event. Yes, I know. "Mud sucks" Anyone got any advice for getting through it quickly? I've driven through lots of mud but not for time. Should I power-brake off the starting line, before the pit, or just drive in gently and gun it?

If you can see others going in it before, you can tell what the entrance wil be like and you can plan on how best to go at it. If there is a big drop off at the start then you might want to take it easier when entering it. Keep your RPMs us and gun the crap out of it. Gotta keep the tires spinning fast to clean out the lugs so they grip.

Know your hole. lol. Don't use too much/not enough speed and drop into something getting your self stuck or destroying your jeep. Tires are a good thing, keep em spinnin to clean the mud outta the treads. Sometimes if you stop you just stuck yourself more. Might have to use rocking techniques like reverse/fwd to get yourself going.

Mud sucks? I figure anyone who says that never played in it or has a Felix Unger complex. :D

Those mud-hatin' rock lovers can't get very far if their nice dry rocks are covered in mud, or if they have to crawl through axle deep mud & throw a mud-clogged tire up on that rock. :D That is why they have the hate for mud.

I will assume you mean mud bogs that are run like drag races or everyone competes against the clock. I did some of those back when 38" tires were still considered big & enjoyed them. To be really competitive, though, you need enough lift & tire that it makes regular trail running difficult sometimes. They can be fun in the "run what you brung" category just to see what you can do.

LOL, Last time I went mudding was in my 1991 Ponitac Sunbird. It did pretty well. Granted the next day when I went to school I had chunks of mud about the size of watermelons on my roof and hood. Since then nothing. It was fun though. Now in Vegas there isn't too much mud...except for the rare spot here or there where the water pools, but then you have the issue of all the debris from the neighborhoods chilling there. Then it can get costly.

I went to a mud bog here in Florida and had a blast! The best part was watching people watch the KJ. Everybody laughed when I showed up. But the Libby showed them she was a real Jeep! Lots of thumbs up when I left. I was running in mud up to the rocker panels all day. As long as I could get traction it wasn't a real problem. As everyone is saying lots of tire rotation is needed. I ran in the low side of second most of the time. That kept the RPM's up and the tires spinning. This was NOT a competition, just a day to play in the mud. I like trails better!

Not a big mud fan myself, but that's my reality now that I am sentenced to the tropics. The problem I have with the advice of throttle throttle and more throttle is the unknown. What's under the mud? What will happen to the front diff if suddenly my fast-spining tires find instant traction on something? Is there debris in there that's going to tear a CV boot?

I put it in 4 lo drive at a steady pace and turn the wheel back and forth in seach of traction. I don't throw rooster tails and you can still see my paint, but at the end of the day, I am driving home in the same Jeep that got me there.

Yea the problem I always have with mud is clogging up the fins on the radiator and overheating the engine. Make sure you keep the radiator clean or you won't last the day.

Get nasty mud tires,I highly recommend Boggers, don't let off the gas for any reason(unless you break something),4low is your friend(don't look at the speedo),and rock the steering wheel back and forth some while going down the pit.

If you don't have at least boggers or TSL's I would pass unless you like getting pulled out.If there anything like the mud races back home you don't stand a chance even in the stock class, sorry but the truth.

Advantage of bogging in a KJ is once you make it through, you and your interior are still crystal clean.

Just don't get stuck.

So do you think with the amount of skids we have underneath (smoother bottom - fewer "ledges"), we don't backup the mud underneath us as much to slow us down compared to other vehicles?

I always say mud sucks, but when you run in it I just give it hell! Every mud hole is different and the same technicis that work in one may not work in another. The best thing is to watch others and learn the hole. You will figure out real quick how you are going to need to attack it (or maybe that you don't even want to give it a try! lol). On another note, I really don't know if the Libby is a good vehicle to do it in. But that being said I haven't ever hit a good mud hole in the Libby either.

Yeah. I just joined the "other" 4x4 club in town. They have 2 mud bog competitions a year. It's a groomed pit so there shouldn't be any debris. They do have a "mini stock" class so I won't be competing against the big trucks. It is a timed thing. Two runs, combine your times for rank, reverse order on the second run. Hopefully I won't be first either time. I think mini stockers will be the last class to run in the small pit (about a foot deep) so hopefully I won't have too much trouble getting a little bit of traction. Wish I could afford a set of boggers but that's just not gonna happen by tomorrow morning. Besides, that'd put me in a whole other class that I just don't think the KJ could handle.

So, the only other thing I can think of... tire pressure... should I air down for flotation? How much?

Chains? I dunno if they are legal in your competition, but those might help in a mud bog. I thought about a set of "go claws" or some similar synthetic tire chain substitute that is friendlier to the trails.

On a real trail I would not use chains as they would tear everything up, but you cannot hurt a mud bog so why not?

IF they allow them, I'm pretty sure that would put me in the next higher class. Not to mention, that would add even more weight to my already over-loaded axles. (soft 8's and 10-ply MTRs)

Oh, what's everyone's opinion on taking the swaybars off, also? Think it might help if I hit hard clumps?

No. Your lack of ground clearance is going to kill you immensely (I know). Last time I went wheeling, I went through a small muddy pit and got hung up on my axles nearly instantly.

Actually it turned out to be the lack of clearance between the rotors and rims that stopped me. I somehow managed to get a 2" x 4" egg-shaped rock between them on my first run. Everyone, myself included, thought I had blown a CV when it caught one of the round holes in the Soft 8 and the caliper. Well that and the mud was extremely deep and sticky. The rock broke before anything else, miraculously.

1st run: 31' 5"
2nd run: 31' 9"
The pit was 120" long. :?

There were 8 trucks in mini-stock (6 or fewer cylinders, 35" or smaller tires, fully licensed for street). Pretty sure I took last but I think I had the heaviest vehicle in my class, too. I didn't have the shortest run of the day, though. :D It was still a lot of fun and I got tons of compliments on the KJ. Pretty sure one of the other contestants is even shopping for one today. :D

If my brother managed to take any good ones, I'll get some pics up later. There were also videocams floating around as well so I'm hoping somebody posts some of those, too.
