OK well if any of you have missed any of this search and repair mission refer to my previous thread :http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=33267

I have replaced my U joints, and after jacking up the front end I discovered that the passenger side axle shaft coming from the differential is either bent, loose, caddy-wampus, whatever... makes a gawd awful noise around 15-25 mph, and vibrates like crazy...

Here is a video to confirm my findings. (sorry about the bad camera skills)

Now my questions are. what part is that to be replaced? how difficult? safe to drive? The CV joints are fine, no tears, no clicking, ect.

You need some of these........

Looks like the above "C" clip is not holding the CV shaft in the diff correctly, got mine at the dealer, there like $5 each. The passenger side is part # 05066064AA,for some reason I can't find the drivers side part#.When you pull the CV shaft out make sure the old "C" clip is still on the CV shaft,or you will need to remove the diff cover and find it.

OR................

The outer bushing is worn and you need a new one, along with new outer seals.Leaking a gear oil? Checked the diff fluid level?

So how tough of a job would it be to replace the C-clip or the outer seal? I have never torn down the front end further than upper a-arm install, and lift install.

I have never noticed any fluid leaking out of my jeep, it is garage kept so I would notice it on the floor. I am going to double check to see if the level is correct. should be near the top of the fill plug correct? anyone done a write up on CV axle replacement or anything similar?

That looks like the shaft coming out of the diff is bent, to me. BUT, it's very hard to tell with the camera moving constantly. If you can put the camera on a tripod (make one, camera is 1/4-20 thread), it would be much easier to tell.

Like I said in your other post, I was having the same problem.
I took my whole cv shaft out and found what Troy was saying with the C clip. Mine was kinda not looking good, but also I had a CV problem along with it. So I just replaced the whole CV and axel shaft. It cost me $70.00 NEW not a reman from my cuz who has a parts strore and it came with all the needed parts.

The job is not all that bad.
In my 03 I had to take pretty much the whole wheel assy off and knuckle. Removed my strut fork because the shaft just did not make it though the fork. TAD BIT TOO BIG! UGG! cost me another 30 mins.
I took the tie rod off the knuckle, LJB, UBJ, breaks and calipar, 2 bottle of beer, heated the rotor cuz it was STUCK! then the wheel bearing and the 35mm socket for the cv nut. Then it all came rite off. Had more beer then put it all back together again and then took it for a test drive and problem went away. But I found another problem that lead me to my rear DIFF.

troy and JD, thanks for the reply to begin with.

JD, I follow the process all the way up to the wheel bearing, I'm assuming you just take a flatblade screw driver, and gently tap it out?

Also when you get everything apart and pull the CV axle, where do i get to the c-clip troy mentioned? how do i change it out?

Got mine from the dealer, only place I could find them, about $5 each, the pass side is different from the drivers side(pass side is pink, drivers side is black).A small flat tip screw driver is used to pop the old one off and gently ease the new one on,then slam the CV back into the diff, this will require alot of force since the new "C" clip will be very stiff.

ok, so in theory the old C-clip will stay on the CV?

ok. I got my parts. Ive been taking everything apart to get out the CV, and I have done everything except getting the LBJ to break loose out of the LCA.

Ive tried WD-40, hammering on the stud, beating the LCA to try to free it up. I even put the jack under it to try to push it up with the weight of the jeep, to no avail. any hints?

Should I just go to auto zone and rent a ball joint puller thing?

I am so close to getting the knuckle and CV off...

Put a jack under the rotor(or hub if rotor was taken off) and raise the jack up(only works with the strut/coil still in) and place some of the KJ weight on the LCA,not to much though.Take that 2-3lbs hammer and wack the LCA close to where the LBJ goes through the LCA(have the LBJ nut completely off),just like how you do the UBJ.I do mine this way and works every time,a few good wacks is all is needed with some pressure on it.

I finally got the LBJ out, but the strut fork is pissing me off. I hate this project, I'm about to just say forget it, put it all back together, and take it to the dealership...

What about the fork? Just take it off for replacing that C-clip.

thats the thing, I can get the bottom bolt out, I hammered it most of the way through, but its not coming out... I'm going to keep trying, just getting frustrated. Not only does the clip need to be replaced, but it my efforts to get it taken apart I torn the boot on the CV and on the LBJ.

I'm not having a good jeep day... :x

At this point I have NO PROBLEMS getting my LCA amd LBJ off. because it has been off several times over the lst few weeks. LOL......

Man HOOD,
I feel your fustration man. I have ( STILL) there......just getting my rear diff completed tomorrow. I hope this is it for my KJ. I hope no more problems.

Instead of getting the clip, just get a whole new CV and save yourself from making another trip underneath the KJ to replace it later. Get a replacement LBJ boot from Jeepin' By Al and slip right over there. Better yet, get MOOGs from JBA and the replacement boots just in case. Don't get frustrated about the suspension, it wasn't meant to be easy but if you're proactive in your maintenance and replacements, you'll spend less time down there :x which is all for the better.
