Post subject:  Painted skids today

Got bored, kept looking at my red front tow hooks, decided the kj needed more red. So, I took off all the skids, and put 5 coats of paint on them and they turned out great. Now all I have to do is finalize my diff cover situation, get it back and paint it to finish the look. I was going to do my gas skid, but it is so big and I didn't want too much red, so I left it black. (also that puppy is a pain to get off with the rear hitch) I'll post pics tonight when I get home.

I'm anxious to get mine this week. I want to paint them, and I was going to ask today, other than rust oleum primer, what are you using for a color coat? I want something a little harder, right? I have a couple cans of safety blue, or OSHA blue, I don't remember, but its rust oleum epoxy. is that okay to use, you think?

The can I use says metal, wood, etc. and I figured, screw it, it is going to get scuffed and scratched anyway, so if it chips or scratches badly I'l just spray some on there to touch up. Not too worried about it.

I think I am going to paint the bolts black on the diff cover. Keep true to the black and red theme.

2006 kj,
What is the deal with your license plate? That looks crazy :?

welp.. the diff cover is ruff stuff.. however when i painted it i sanded it down pretty well with 80grit then 150 on a DA sander.. then primed it.. then sealed it.. then put 2 coats of paint and 2 of clear coat.. so it looks real smooth :) thought about wetsanding and buffing then realized i was crazy.

MNKK- those are how all our plates look here in the UKraine. just joking my licenses plate is a "D.A.R.E." (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) license plate. i had an all black car before so i loved how it was all black with little red and white. it was a special plate option in PA.. still is but now they are blue instead of black. the PA plate is REAL tacky.. white with blue on top and bright yellow on bottom... so i just thought the DARE plate looked much better.. plus some of my money buying it goes to a good cause (it was like 30 bucks)

Sweet, nice to know my cover could look that smooth, but I doubt I'll put any effort into it beyond paint.

should look good anyway! it was smooth and REAL strong to begin with. however i did have to grind the crap outta the inside to get it to clear 2 screws and square plates on the inside of the cover. just put some black spray paint in the cover.. held it on to see where it scratched off the paint and hogged into it. i think he fixed that problem.. but in case he didnt figured i'd give you a heads up

what grade are the bolts on the rear diff cover? bc Im pretty sure that SS bolts are about the same as a grade 5

noo idea what the SS or normal bolts are. but they are pretty short. if that matters for anything.. i've got no clue what hardness they are

I got the cover with the recessed bolts and drain too! So those will all be black as well as the fill.

ask tjkj what the thread pattern is and buy whatever grade you want. Bolts are pretty cheap.
