| Post subject: | Pinion reset??? |
So I need my pinion electronically reset and I have called around to 3 different places and all 3 had no idea what I was talking about. Am I missing something? I had to explain what I was talking about and finally they got it but then when I asked how much, they wanted $120 to do it. I saw somewhere on here that someone had theirs done and it was only 1/2 hour labor no parts. The guys I talked to wanted 1 hour labor plus 40 for the part. What am I missing? They finally understood that I wanted my speedo to work with the new rev per mile but they had never heard of electronically resetting the pinion. One guy had never even heard of a jeep liberty!!!!!!!!!!! He thought I was talking about the 4 door jk. It is like I am in the twighlight zone!!!!! Should i just say screw it and not bother? |

Well first off most will not know that you can do that in a Jeep, look for a dealership with a bunch of modified Jeeps in the employee parking area.Second there is no parts to be put on or replaced or whatever,it's just hooking the DRBIII scanner to the KJ and going into the BCM and changing the rev's per mile count for the speedo.Had mine done for like $50,and they had to actually think about it on mine since I also had the 4.10's and not the 3.73's. |

I know that is what blows me away, the Reno dealer does lots of lifted and custom tj and jk stuff but they wanted $120 flat rate he said. Is there something different about the 05s since they changed them a little? |

Well every place is going to charge different amounts, your basically paying a standard diagnostic fee to have that scanner hooked up to your KJ,and that fee is different at every shop you will go to,ranges from $50-$150.

Man, I hate dealerships. I just got off the phone with them and told the guy all he needed to do was hook up the "DRBIII scanner to the KJ and going into the BCM and changing the rev's per mile count for the speedo" (tjkj's lingo) and he all of a sudden knew exactly what i was talking about. He said, it might take an hour, but should be around $80 for labor only. What a joke. Same friggin dealership wanted $120 like 10 minutes ago. I am going to have to find someone else that can do it cause I really don't want to get screwed. He wasn't even sure if the kj could be reset for such "large" tires, my relatively small 31s. |

See getting to know the "tech lingo" can help you alot when talking to other tech's |

Seriously, it was as if a light litterally went on and he knew. Otherwise he just sounded like he wanted me to bring it in and he would fool with something random on it and charge me. I'm hoping that when I bring it in they knock it out quick and only charge me the true 1/2 hour labor it actually takes, and not the full hour he quoted me. |

The actual time to hook up the meter and punch in the Rev. per mile for mine was just about 2 minutes. Oh yeah, and they did it for free! |

I thought of that, but it is 40 min drive from me, and they want a minimum $99 to do it. |

How much difference does it make to get it done... Mine acts ok IMO, around 45 is have zero power if you drop to 45 from a higher speed. but it's not terrible... |

Mine was free, and we did it about three times to get the right setting. (gee, would have thought my first guess, which was a random number chosen for testing purposes would have been right Finally came upon correct revs per mile, for 31' tyre 677 per mile. BUT>>>>>>>>> In the 2005 model, the ECU may not have that same system for reseting the pinon, it may have a selection of tyre sizes to choose from, thus limiting you ability to set it exactly. Just choose the closest tyre size to what you have, don't go large, that will cause more problems. cmohr |

On my 05 the dealership tried but when they did it the speedomemeter stopped working. They put it back to the factory setting. I think they could have at least tried to put it as high as they could. My tires are 31.7". Terry |
