Post subject:  Which older model Jeep TJ or Cherokee wheels will fit?

I'm going to do a 2" budget lift on my CRD for now so I can get some MTR's underneath for a camping trip up to North Carolina this year and I'm trying to find a set of used steel wheels off a TJ or Cherokee. Can anyone comment on if they've used them and if so, which ones? So far I think I'd be ok with a set of stock TJ or 93+ Cherokee wheels but I'm not sure as I can't confirm if they're 15 or 16". Bottom line - I'm looking for a cheap booty way to get a set of steel wheels. I'm gonna paint them flat black and be done with it.

I found this on Wikipedia:

With a 17" wheel there is a limited selection of all-terrain tires available. A popular upgrade for the lifted Liberty is stock 16x8" Jeep Wrangler Rubicion wheels (Moab Wheels) with 5" of backspacing and 245/75R16 Goodyear MTR Tires. The Liberty's stock 16x7" wheel can fit a 10.5" wide tire with no problems. Only a few 15" wheels can fit on the Liberty without interfering with the brake caliper. Some other choices are the Rock Crawler Xtreme Steel Wheels with a backspacing of 4.5" or 3.75" or Cragar Wheels with 4-4.5" of backspacing. A backspacing of under 4" will work, but is not recommended because rubbing on suspension components may occur.

You "can" fit OE TJ alloys with spacers
I dont think that TJ steelies would fit even with spacers ,they will hit on the breaks

Why do you want to go with steelies from another model Jeep?
also why not keep the OE alloys and put the tires on them?

I know that others will not agree but it is just not worth the headache to try to fit wheels that are not very close to OE spec
we have OME med. coils on our KJ with with 245/75 MTR's on OE wheels ,and after the fog lamp door and pinch weld adjustment NO rub
now with the newer front end you will not have the fog lamp door issue but 99% of the time pinch weld adjustment is needed

also keep in mind that MTR's new are quite expensive and there are other choices out there

I agree, IF you need steelies or a 15" rim, it would be easier and cheaper to just get a set of Soft 8's. I got mine through Quadratec with some price matching for $40 a piece with free shipping, that alone is a set of spacers, and you would still have to get the rims.

I have never seen any rims from the wranglers etc that I like liked enough to put on and go to all the work needed to install them, well except for the Moabs but thats it!

I would just go black (soft 8s  ) and not look back!

I want steel wheels so that I can beat the lip back if I damage it. You only need to ding a aluminum rim once beyond repair in the bush to realize that you should have gone with steels...

What about the stock Liberty steel wheels I've seen one a couple of stock trucks driving around? I can't seem to find anything on them online. Soft 8's would be great but that's still $200 for wheels... I can't put a lot of cash into this rig right now. I've got a crawler Discovery that sucks up all my cash. :) I thought if there was a stock steel wheel from another model that would fit and I could pickup a set for $50-$75 because no one else wants them I'd be golden.

I have the stock aluminum wheels on my TJ and wheel the crap out of it
I have yet to break one ,I have gotten small rocks wedged between the tire and rim also hunks of tree but never damaged a wheel
The trails that I have taken rocks in the bead would be a no way in a KJ and ,IMO, for the most part the trails that a KJ can run will not have any obstacles so demanding that this will be an issue worth worrying about

I have 16x8" Moab wheels and they work fine. When I got the KJ it had big O tires which were small and felt unsafe at stock height with the 16x8" wheel. I immediately replaced them with 245/70/16 BFG TA KO (all terrain) stock height , later lifted and now have 265/75/16 BFG TA KM (mud terrain) and lifted. The 16x8" Moab WHEELS fit fine and the WHEELS have not rubbed with the different tires and suspension height.

main thing is getting the bolt pattern and back spacing to match or give more room than stock, as long as your back spacing matches stock for a baseline then it's up to your tire size to to make you final decision about backspacing.

X2...my "silver" wheels like those are peeling and the paint is just sitting there waiting for me to find the time.

Eastwood makes a good wheel paint. Satin black is what I used. I'm not sure if they have a gloss black wheel paint, wouldn't surprise me though, they have everything else.

There's a lot of other options though. Almost any good outdoor metal paint will do the job. Prep work is important if you want the paint to stay on well.

Eastwood would be the one I'd go with. Someone else on the board used it with great results.
