I'm curious about upgrading the brakes on my 02 liberty. I want to know if it is possible to put bigger, more powerful brakes on it. What are some good names, how much difference can I expect with "bigger brakes", and can I expect any new problems?

There are no "big brake" kits for the KJ so you can only upgrade to better rotors and pads(PowerSlot rotors are very good).Custom calipher brackets would be needed to fit bigger rotors.

I never heard of any one upgrading their breaks to a bigger size. Not too sure if it can be done with out upgrading alot more than just rotors and calps.

Are you having problems with you brakes now? I've towed a 5,000 pound (the maximum "safe" limit for the KJ) trailer and had no problems stopping with the stock brakes.

What are you doing that requires bigger brakes?

You'd have to get custom calipers, bigger rotors, and probably larger wheels and tires to accomodate the larger rotors. All that would probably cost $2000 easily.

Don't forget to include:

Larger brake booster to handle the extra pressure needed to apply the brakes
Redone Proportioning Valve for proper tuning
Removal of the rear drums (2002 model) and adding rear disks [might as well since your in there doing all this work]
New Lines
Fittings
Fluid

This project could go well over $3k for new or custom sourced equipment.

I'd be uping that number to around $5000-$10,000 for a custom "big brake" kit.

There is a cheaper alternative,Vanco brake systems will make a Hydro Boost system for a KJ(they just need the OEM booster bolt pattern) that runs off the PS pump.Of course it isn't that cheap,it would run about $1500-$1800,a new PS pump will be needed and most likely those of you with ABS would lose that function but the greater force provided by the Hydro Boost is amazing.Stock system psi is about 800-1000psi,a Hydro Boost system is about 2500psi which means better clamping force and no real need for larger rotors.

Or you can just buy all the parts needed from a place like Wycoff Chysler,a online OEM discount parts place,,it would be cheaper and it's only 4 bolts on each side to swap the drums to disc's.The hardest part is replacing the drum brake parking cables with the disc brake parking cables, they are different but cheap and a pain to replace.
