I know there has been information posted on Diff Collars before but, can anyone point me in the right direction where to find the information. I am looking to buy a diff collar from any company that will mail to Australia. Thanks for your help.

Sorry, no install pics, but we did have to take the Skid Row Front Skid off to be able to put it on.

Here is a shot of my collar installed. I used a steel one and I did have to grind down the ID by the edges where the split is for it to fit snug. Since the collar is steel and the diff is aluminum I put a thin coat of JB weld on the inside of the collar. I did not have to remove my front skid as I had plenty of room to work with. I put the bolts in from the top and used a little Lock-Tite to keep them there. Mine is also manufactured by Stafford but you have to get them from a retailer as they do not sell directly to the public. Here is a link to the aluminum collar. Maybe you can email Stafford to see if they have a "down under" retailer?

That is a good idea --

I checked here:
http://www.staffordmfg.com/Distributors.aspx

It shows that they have distributors in Canada and England. It 'might' be cheaper dealing with them from OZ as they are located in fellow Commonwealth Countries.

Has anyone actually gone out and tried to grenade their diff after installing one of these? I'd just like to know, because the collor could be our end-all solution for the front diff problem, even if it is just for 31-32 inch tires.

I thought these were supposed to be not worth it but after reading all his info I might have to pick one of these up. Sounds to me like they work well enough. Could be a really easy and relatively cheap way to save a big headache.

If you watch my front end I was pretty much giving it hell at this point with lots of spinning and abrupt stoppage of the front wheels. I had to do the same shenanigans and skullduggery 4 times to get past that obstacle and only heard a little popping and creaking when backing down...nothing while going up. Linky...

I think Gris had the collar on and managed to break a CV joint - but the Diff held.

I gernaded, literly blew it apart,a outer CV joint(drivers side),the grease squirted about 4',never did find any of the balls, and I have no collar and the diff was in perfect shape.

The collar may hold the diff together but it still will crack when that sudden stop happens, and unless you weld it on I doubt it will even hold the diff together and if not a 100% perfect fit may actually cause premature pinion bearing failure if over torqued(warping the pinion bearing housing).I'd say more trouble then it worth.

Yeah, this is because one of our fellow Australian KJ's grenaded his front diff a few weeks ago, and we had to pull it apart on the side of a hill.

Thankyou very much for the great information. I think a group buy for Australia is a great idea.

I am sure you can locate a local supplier for these in Oz. Look to industrial coupling supply houses or even fluid transfer supply houses. It is a "shaft collar" or more precisly a "split shaft collar" that comes in two pieces. Get the metric equiv. of 3 9/16" & you are good to go.

I got mine off the shelf locally. It is a Ruland stock # SP-57-F 3 9/16" NOMAR two-piece split shaft collar.

My apologies - I remembered someone having problems and it took some searching to find them
It was Mutt at Crozet - he twisted a CV, bent skid plates and bumpers - but the Diff held

scroll up for the story - but this was his comment about the collar.
