I'm thinking about keeping my kj in full time 4x4. It seems a smoother ride when it is in there anyways, so really, what could the down side be? Increase wear? Less gas mileage?

Slightly decreased fuel mileage, I drive in Full time pretty much the all winter. With the stock tires, the KJ would get very squirrelly. Suprisingly, (or maybe not) I don't use full time as much as I used to. The siped Goodyear MTR's handle much better on wet roads than those slick as snot SRA's :D :D

Less gas mileage is really the only down side.

The front driveshaft is always turning anyway so the wear increase is negligable.

With the "full time t-case" you won't hurt anything. I have noticed very little difference in gas mileage with mine in full time as opposed to 2wd. You can't unlock your front hubs so almost everything is turning anyway.

Same here. I found myself using it a lot with the SR-A's but now that I have Revos, I have to remind myself to put it in AWD in a downpour, but yes, there is only a very slight difference in fuel economy in full-time. Not really a huge drawback for the added safety. My other vehicle's a quattro, so you know how I feel.

Kind of off on a tangent here ... so if the front drive shaft is always turning then what happens when the front diff grenades? Is it "safe" to keep there for the limp home? Will something bind up badly and you end up with accident?

I dont think the mpg should go down any at all. Putting it in full time just puts torque on parts that were already turning so it shouldnt matter.

It will put more wear and tear on the front drive shaft, front diff, and cv joints but its all made for it so you should use it. I usually have it in full time when it rains.

No.

If you gernade the front diff both CV shafts and the front driveshaft will need to come out to limp back home. The same is true if you blow a CV joint as well, keep a 35mm socket handy at all times.

I have towed a KJ with front wheels on a dolly without a problem, but the owners manual says its a no-no.
