So, since I am planning my lift, and my tires... I have to ask. What are wheel spaces, how do they work, and why do I want them. Now, I'm probably going with the daystar 2.5" lift, and will be paying a lot of cash for installation, so is this something that "should" be done during this installation? Or can this just be put on anytime?

Personally I would stay away from wheel spacers, you go from 20 lugnuts to worry about to 40 with wheel spacers. Also you might want to check with the local law enforcement to see if they are legal in your parts, some places wheel spacers are illegal. There is only one company that makes good wheel spacers,SpiderTrax, and they are not cheap, about $200 per axle.Save yourself some money and get rims with less BS(safer way to get the wider stance),the steel Crager Soft 8 sytle rims are only about $50 each.

if you decide to get some get Spidertrax nothing alse is as good, but like TJKJ2002 said you would be better off just buying some Soft 8 for $50 each it would cost the same and be safer and easier

I have spidertrax spacers and love them. Some states they are illegal for road use but i have yet to be pulled over and asked. :? Even went through NJ state inspection with them. I got them because i didn't want to buy 5 new wheels. The chance of them coming loose is about the same as lug nuts coming loose which would be the fault of whoever put them on. I've had mine on for over 20k miles and they never once came loose. Oh and they are about $99 per axle (set of 2, need 2 sets). Still cheaper than buying 5 new wheels. The only way i'd get rid of mine is if i found a set of moabs real cheap.

No one really answered your question about what they are. They mount between the rim and the axle hub. This moves the rim and tire further away from the center of the vehicle. You get a wider stance (which can be accomplished with a lower Backspacing, as already mentioned).

When will you need them? If you have a set of rims that you want to put on, but they won't clear the break calipers (mostly 15"). You can add the spacers to move the rim further from the caliper.

You can also add them to get a wider stance for stability, or the appearance (again, you can do this with different rims too).

They may or may not allow you to fit a tire that you could not otherwise fit. Probably not since it would rub other places.

Problems? They add a little extra stress on the suspension (but so does low backspace rims). They can also corrode if you get cheap ones (spidertrax are anodized, so less of an issue). And as mentioned, there are more lugnuts to be concerned with. I've never heard of one falling off though. I may add some myself, but my main concern is the fact that your lug studs would be mounted in aluminum instead of steel. Your original studs are used to hold the spacer on and the lug studs mounted in the spacer (aluminum) hold the rim on. Not a fan of a block of aluminum holding my rim on...
