So, my mopar boulder bars are starting to get a real beating. After todays run, the passenger side is pretty bent. Its pushed in and up pretty bad (pictures to come). I'm wondering what would be a good replacement, I want cheap as possible here, and also something that sticks out as much as the mopar ones, and of course, sturdy |

who knows you should just check with them or buy some Boudler Bars that, and check around on craigslist and you can usually find some pretty cheap |

Rock rails is not a place you want to "go cheap",get some good ones like the Skink sliders from Rock Lizard or the Boulder bars.Making your own is a way to go also but make sure you make them strong enough to hold the weight of your KJ,the mounting is very vital area also, make sure they mount to the pinchweld and the unibody "frame". I know my Super Skink sliders are worth there weight in gold, saved my KJ many, many times from major body damage. And no I'm not just saying this since I work with RL,they are that dang good. |

FYI, Boulder Bars are a product made by ALL J's. The generic name is usually rock rails or rock sliders. But to answer your question the MOPAR ones are pretty much for looks, they won't hold up to a beating for long. You looking at about 350-450 for a set of Boulder Bars from All J's, Skink Sliders or Super Skinks from Rock Lizard, or the ones from RRO which are similar to RL but not quite as strong since it has less mounting points. Not sure if I would use a local fab shop unless they were familiar with the KJ and how you would have to mount the bars to make work right. Plus with the super high cos of steel along with the shop rate you may end up paying the same amount if not more. |

Talk down about mopar all you want guys, but they have saved my vehicle a few times already, so they are still worth something. They may not be able to withstand a lifetime of abuse like the rocklizard ones (possibly on my todo list of upgrades) but hey, when I came down hard on a tree stump (I think) yesterday, it hit my rail, and not my vehicle. I have no actual vehicle damage, just a bent rock rail. Or whatever you call them. I'll ask this since there is a rock lizard employee here, do you have any Canadian dealers, or is it all from your shop? I'm in Atlantic Canada, so cost and shipping will be a pain. Do these just bolt on? Thanks! |

Quote: do you have any Canadian dealers Not at the present moment.Shipping is a pain anywhere you ship these days from the fuel prices being high.Quote: Do these just bolt on? Yes they are bolt on but 22 holes(both sides) need to be drilled, not hard but a second set of hands is very nice since they are very beefy,a set of Super Skinks are about 70lbs for the set.

jerseykj wrote: 22 holes Sorry no picks but seven 3/8" holes need to be drilled on each side pinchweld and 4 per side on the unibody "frame rail" for mounting,a overkill mounting system that is far stronger then what the OEM rails use.
The pic below shows the rgular Skink Sliders and the mounting hardware, this is the older style frame mounts and since went to a better design with only 2 bolts per leg.
Can the OEM rails live up to this?

trust me, I have the RL Super Skink Sliders, and would had my stock mopar ones. I got the RL ones b/c when i got rear-ended about 1 year ago, they mopar ones just caved in in the middle's. THESE RL PRODUCTS ARE THE STRONGEST!!!!! |

I'm not saying the mopar are as strong as the RL, obviously not. All I am saying is that the mopar parts, are not just "for looks" as you all seem to be saying. They may not be bullet proof like the RL stuff, but they have still held up to a few good beatings that I have given them. Either way, I still don't really have my answer as to is it a good idea to get some custom built, and what brands are out there, other than RL |

If the price is right then I'd go custom built. Rocky Road Outfitters, All J Products Boulder Bars, Rock Lizard, Carolina Rock Shop and JKS SuperNerf bars are the only ones I think I know of. |

RRO rock rails are junk. I'll definitely be going with some Skinks sometime this year. |

The RRO's are, well, pictures being worth 1000 words, let me just say: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/325889/13 The All J Boulder Bars are MUCH beefier. |

Best of all is that the frame, where the mounting points are, is still weaker than the bars and it will bend/flex if you hit it hard enough. That is why I will be plating my outer frame area in the near future before reinstalling my bars. |

i agree that the mopar rock rails are not just for looks.. they've saved mine many times.. and they have also bent many times. however i'm lucky enough to have 3 frame machines at my disposal so i just pull'em back into place and let the beatings continue |

Yeah they bend, but they do the job and if you already have them, beat the poo out of em and then go get something else or make them stronger. They worked for me and gastip on our trail run on Sat. They dented but hey, our rocker panels are in prefect shape. Beat em up and move on. |
