I was wondering if there is a break-in time for a Powertrax? If I need to drain the rear diff after a certain amount of time after the locker is installed, I will just use non-synthetic oil upon install. If I do not need to do this and I do not tow anything should I use 75w90 like what is in there now or will 75w140 be better for it? |

I thought there is a break in period but Im not 100% positive, I would use synthetic fluid I use and like Royal Purple and it has a slight additive for lockers or LSDs, but now I cant remember what I used something 140 I dont know if it was 70w or 90 |

After my install, it took a couple hundred miles until I hear my first "pop" that so many people hear. I assume, it was still breaking in during that time. I didn't replace the fluid until the 12,000 mile mark, and have been using 75w110 synthetic, split the difference since I do tow, but don't really want the heavy stuff. |

My break in period was the 130 mile drive down to Wellsville to go off-roading. I've faithfully used the cheap Wal-Mart dino 75W140 gear oil rather than the more expensive synthetic. Oh, and the Power Trax is still going strong, no noises. |

the breaking period on my first one was ~150 city miles and 500' down the trail the breaking period on the second one was about 500 miles 1 good trail ride and finished it off on an easy trail ride on my Detroit I have around 1000 miles and 6 trail rides I was told to change the oil "after a while but sooner than normal because you use it harder than most" The plan is to change it when the weather gets cooler |

Per Powertrax manual break-in period is 50 miles and drive it normally. No special lubricant needed use the spec gear oil regular or synthetic. I'm using 80W90. |

Well, it's in and working. Ended up using 75W140 synthetic. Road manners take a bit getting used to but nothing major or unexpected...except maybe the pulling to the right pulling away from a light...just need to modulate the go pedal. Yes, and after I did read the owners manual everything made sense. I did not have the locker as it was shipped to the installer since I did not have the time or inclination to put it in. We'll see how it does off road this weekend. Thanks for the feedback folks. |
