Post subject:  For all those who have clanking/clicking noise after lifting

Created this thread to see how many did experience this issue after lifting the KJ especially those who have Daystar with Al's A-arms. I did the spacer lift first time with the stock shocks. Then I got the shocks with the arms and had to de-assemble the front suspension again to install them. That's when I had the clanking/clicking noise coming from the front right side. Only when I steer. And I got twice while steering with the car parked; no motion at all. It's not continuously happening though; only on rough terrains, and only when steering.

I read here about the sway bar ends might be causing the noise. I went out today and completely removed the sway bar and drove without it with caution; no good. I had the same clanking/clicking noise even with the sway bar completely removed.

Would appreciate your input/suggestions.

If you haven't had it in very long take it out and give it some good ruff treatment. Then check all the nuts for tightness to specifications. Then, get an alignment done.

I did all that except the ruff off road. I did only mild off road and it was still loud UNTILL I beat the h+ll out of it. Now it's nice and quiet. Some of the guys that have more knowledge than me will correct this if I'm wrong!

Check all the nuts/bolts holding the front suspension/ball joints/a-arms/shocks/struts etc BEFORE you do any wild wheeling. Probably should check the ball joints for play too.

Does the sound change with speed? Does it change when you put the transfer case into 4-hi? These could be significant clues as to what is producing(or rule out) the sounds you are hearing.

If the clicking noise is only heard when you steer and/or it changes with speed, I would chance a guess that your passenger CV joint is going bad. This might not have been noticed before the lift because the lift significantly changes the CV angles. That is if it is the CV.

Thanks for the advice John. I'm going out now to re-balance the rods and I will check the lower ball joint on the passenger side. I didn't check it before. But I don't know how to check the CV joints. Probably someone posted that somewhere on the forum. Anyway, at least now I have ruled out the A-arm hitting the spring and the sway bar ends.

It was the upper control arm. It was not torqued enough. Now the car runs with no noise. Thanks for all those who replied here.

@ carbolight

I was tooling around on Google Earth today and came across Moreeb(Moraeb) hill and the UAE Desert Challenge. Have you ever been to this area? Is the Desert Challenge thing 4-wheeling related?

Was just wondering...I love looking at deserts on Google Earth and just came across Liwa Oasis and then Moreeb Hill to the south.

Another hobby of mine is photographing scorpions....and one reason I like deserts...also great places for 4-wheeling.

Cheers,
John

John, sorry didn't see your post before today. The desert challenge is a 4wheel big event here in UAE. Never been to Liwa before, but guys who did say it's the real desert with soft sand and huge sand dunes. We go out every weekend for a desert drive even during summer times when temperature easily hit 120 degrees. You could check the gallery of our website http://www.ad4x4.com and you could find pictures of our trips.
