Tie rod Rack & Pinon boot

Hope this isn't going to be wicked expensive... :evil:

Have a torn tie-rod rack & pinon boot. Yes, the steering was swimmy on the 300 mile trip back over the Sierras to home. Got to the point, the ESP didn't like the gale wind buffeting at Altamont Pass. Other than that, kept her in lane between the yellow stripe on the left and white one on the right. Any speculation if I need more than a boot?

yes you have to replace the steering rack, i just had that happen and i paid about $600 installed but i got one with a lifetime warrenty

which boot are you talking about? The boot on the tie rod end or the boot around the tie rod shaft?

Can you not buy just the boot on the tie rod shaft?

I think he is talk about both the inner and outer tie rod ends. If that is the case you must buy the whole tie rod (outer & inner), can't just replace the boot.

Boot at the end of the horizontal rack assembly, just clear of frame member, with tie rod angling down, passenger side. Suspect the dealership is going to give a wicked price. For service, she's also going in for coolant temp (thermostat or electric fan) and upper ball joint check. Prior to this, was thinking about getting Al's Gen 4.5 UCA and greasable Moog's.

Was a good weekend though, wheeling the Sierra near Mammoth up to 10000 foot Laurel Lakes. Coulda happened there, but the previous NorCal KJ weekend at Tahoe's Strawberry Pass was tougher on the underbelly.

my dealership quoted me $1500 including an alignment! I got it all done fo $700 from the guy who does my lockers

Why would you have to replace the whole rack? That seems excessive for what's probably $50 (AT MOST) in parts.

A big crescent wrench, channel locks (pipe wrench is better though), 24mm open end wrench, new clamps for the new boot, and you'll be good as new...er...well, at least as good as it was before.

He has a torn boot,the only way to get a new boot is with a new/remaned rack and from him saying he had a good shimmy for 300+ miles it would be a good chance his rack is almost toast.

Hmm...never thought about that. I was thinking the worn tie rod would have been causing his shimmy.

plus with mine when I had the tear i was losing fluid whenever I made a turn :roll:

That ment you had a internal rack seal let go,those boots do not seal the rack from fluid escaping,only prevents junk getting into the rack since the main hydrualic piston is on the passenger side of the rack.

Yup, me too. Sheered rightside mount for steering rack and torn tie rod-rack boot, plus electric fan relay. The tin cup looking mount may have cracked last week on the Strawberry Pass obstacle that everyone hung up on, and finally broke this weekend after a run up to 10000 feet on Laurel Lakes Road by Mammoth. Uh, ouch, going to be 4 figures.

Bummer, I thought you made it through that obstacle pretty well without any banging or bumping from what I could tell. Sorry to hear about it regardless.
