Hello all, I'm trying to confirm if the KJ has: a) Metallic Windscreen b) Harley Davidson Head lights I've just acquired a 2006 KJ and the guys at work have been telling me this. Is this true? |

Maybe that's what JL Rockies was asking? |

Some auto makers are now incorporating a thin layer of metal (gold normally) in windshields to help reflect sunlight and keep auto interiors cool - it's similar to what you see on the canopies of fighter jets :
The film is usually barely noticeable from the outside; from the inside the view out is the same as a standard windshield. The downside is that it also reflects some RF signals, such as GPS or those nifty little 'fastpass' transmitters for toll roads. As far as I know Jeep is not equipping vehicles with these but I'll try to find out. |

Ford stopped when they started delaminating in the winter. RR/Bentley just made it better and raised their cars' prices $6,000 (which nobody noticed |

When I was making reference to a "metallic windshield", I was relating it to the fact that there is no radio aerial. I know newer BMW's have this and it does interfere with RFID devices. |

I believe all export KJs have the radio aerial (antenna) in the right rear quarter-window, but I always thought that was primarily due to having the side repeater lights mounted where the aerial and 'Trail Rated' badges would be on a U.S. version. |

Not even I could do that. FWIW... Osram Sylvania Xenon - p/n 67864-04 or 67863-04 made especially for H-D. |

Yeah, I was wondering about the "metallic" part. I know what a windscreen is. Nope, not metallic. BTW, I don't believe that they use the film of gold in the windshield for the radio antenna. Instead there is probably a strip of metal that runs across the top of the windshield that acts as the antenna. I don't think that you can't use a sheet of metal as the antenna itself, only as a reflector. The antenna itself still has to be a wire of some type. UHF might be one part of the spectrum that can use sheets of metal as antenna's, but FM radio needs it to be a wire of some kind. I had a Nissan pickup that had both the aerial and the windshield antenna, the radio could switch back and forth depending on which one had the better signal. The antenna in the windshield was like what is used for the rear defroster. Even if it could be used as an antenna, they would have to make sure it is the right size, otehrwsie it will work as well as using a soda can for an antenna. Antenna's need to be tuned to the frequencies they are recieveing and/or transmitting. Otherwise they don't work near as well. Ask anyone that has tried tuning a CB antenna, they'll tell you what a difference an inch can make. I know that some Buick's had gold film in the windshields. It was used as a defroster for the front. My friend said his worked pretty well. I don't know about reflecting any light, but it probably was a part of them using it. |

Spoke to my local Jeep dealership about the windscreen/windshield. He confirmed that it is not metallic and the aerial is on the RH rear side glass. But he did stipulate that when installing an RFID transponder, make sure that it sits below the black rubbery edgeing on the top of the windscreen. |
