Post subject:  drum brake issue

I just put on new rear brake shoes, drums and spring kit. i put the drum and tire back on and tighten the star wheel up so that i can not even turn the wheel by hand. With the rear jacked up the hand brake test works fine - the wheels stop when i pull the lever. But, when i push on the brake pedal the wheels just slow a little and do not stop. The wheels are just idling in 1st. So i took the drum back off and checked to see if the wheel cylinder was pushing the brake shoes out and they were. Why is the foot brake not working?

i think i figured it out. i am going to have to replace the wheel cylinders on both sides. I think i will just replace all the drum brake components.

Try bleeding the brakes.

Sounds like for one, you have them adjusted way too tight, you should be able to turn them some, just some drag, not as tight as it sounds and then yes bleed them, sounds like you have air in the system, thats why its not stopping when in gear

agree with KJ04

thanks, but i think the wheel cylinder is toast. Only one piston moves which makes me think it is the cylinders. There is no signs of leakage out of the cylinder or lines and i have never taken the hydraulic parts apart so air could not have gotten in.

OK if the piston will not move in the bore then yes replace it, make sure before you put the new ones on that you can loosen the bleeder up , have had new ones with stuck bleeders and then its a PITA, when you retighten your brakes up tighten until there is just a little drag , push on the brakes two or three times to set them and then check the adjustment again, like I said you only want a very slight drag, the self adjusters will take care of the rest
