Post subject:  Lifting - is it possible to get 35" tieres?

Hello, it has been a while since I was on the board. I am mostly using a stock 2006 liberty in the trails of colorado. My hobby is photography, use the liberty to get to places. People I have talked to say for the ruffer trails I will need to have 35" tries. I have read a lot of the lift threads and, some of it does not make sence to me. I don't mind spending the money, but I want to do it right.

1) What kind of clearance does using a 35" tire get me? Is that measured from the diff's?

2) Can the liberty actuall be lifted this high? I read ots of threads and lifting above 2" seems to be an issue. I am guesing that using 35" tires would be more than just a 2" lift.

3) Assuming that the liberty can be lifted, do I need, new diff's becuase of the lift? Are differant disk neded for the breaks?

A friend of mine suggestred that seel the liberty and get a rubi that is already lfted, might be cheaper. But, it seems liberties, even on good condition is only wroth $9k.

to get 35" you need to take that $9k and do a SFA

you can get 32" under it with a 3" lift and lots of trimming and you dont need to change your diff with a lift bc there is no other diff you can get

for a 3" lift get OME HD coils and Rancho shocks and struts a 3 ring clevis and an extra iso pad

Guess this one had 37's on it (edit: At one time, it now sits on 33's and last I hear was for sale)................................tons of money to put into a Jeep to get to that point though........................

I bet if you got a good lift, say a Frankenlift, with a good set of 265-75X16 tires, lockers front and rear with 4.10 gears you could go most everywhere you need to go to take some fantastic shots. Of course you will be spending some bucks to get there but its a business expense right?

or just pull the plug and look in the SFA threads and go for it!

As a fellow liberty owner and jeep enthusiast, I will try my best to give my advice without offending anyone.

If you have not yet spent lots of money on the liberty, and want a rig with huge aftermarket support with the ability to be on 35s for about the same cost it'd take for you to get the liberty on 32s (except for the cost of the tires and the money lost in buying a Wrangler, of course), get a Wrangler, maybe even a Rubi. The downside to this is more money spent and you'll look like 90% (made up) of the other wheelers out there.

If you're looking at the above and thinking you can afford it, but want to keep your Liberty, buy the JBA 6". You'll easily fit 32s under there. From my understanding, you can go slightly bigger than 32s, but unless you want to swap differentials, you won't want to go that large.

If you read the first paragraph and thought that you want to do it but can't afford it, then go with what everyone else has said. I love the Liberty, but I wish I had picked a different vehicle. I bought it before doing my research, and didn't realize it was going to cost so much just to get the thing barely off the ground. Buy something with a frame and solid axles. In the end, unfortunately, it comes down to what the pocket can fathom vs how much time/energy you're willing to spend for mediocre results.

I know that this will "rub some the wrong way" but oh well
Talking with my wife a few weeks back on a trail ride and she said
" I wish that those were out 5 years ago" I asked her "what"
she said "the FJ or 4 door JK because both are better than my KJ"
They are both bigger
both can be had with OE rear lockers ,or front and rear if you go Rubi
both can fit 33's easy and the JK can stuff 35's
The FJ has a better motor
I know that a BB on a JK will fit 33" Iroks ,know SEVERAL rigs with them on OE wheels and spacers
and I know that the FJ will fit 34" LTB's on steelies with just an OME lift ,know a few with this set up as well
and 33 are much easier to deal with than 35's
35's will with out question need gears ,4.56 if not 4.88 33's are fin on stock gearing IF and on IF you get the 6 speed JK or a Rubi the auto is geared to high in first ,IMO, for any thing but 4.10's
the FJ ,I think, comes with 3.9X's ,I think, which is a middle ground for 33's

again this is ALL my opinion
and what I would do if I did not have a TJ

Its funny to read the answers on here, at least to me, everyone wants a bigger tire, lower gears , more power etc etc etc , I wish I would of bought X instead of Z , its all BS to me.

I have built rigs starting at 30 inch tires and ended up with 40s and still was not satisfied, BUT you know what, I drove on the same trails that I now go down and take the Liberty on. The Liberty make take some more time to find the right line but in the end I have just as much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So do what ever you think is right for you, If everyone is telling you that you need 35s then go with a RED Wrangler on 35s ...well that is until they get 37s and tell you that you need 37s to stay up with them now

It is all a big game you know just depends on how you play it and if you want to keep up with the new kids on the block!

Me I will keep building the Liberty

The difference between you and me is you've had the chance to build large rigs :) And at this rate, it's going to be a few more years :(

Wow... lot of answers. The one trail that says requires 4x4's with 35" is independace pass here in Colorado (amoung others).

I have this book that has the trails outlined with GPS cordinats and such. Guild to Colorado Backraods & 4 wheel Dr trails. By Charles Wells. I just want to get there, I not really into my rig is bigger than yours, so it would be a one time thing. So far, I have been doing trails by my self... I know... big no no. But the trails are all reated as stock, so I figure no harm.. and thus far, no harm.

I have not done any of the trails that the book states requires modifications. So, I got to wondering. I have been a a few places that I had to restart the line. So I asked around about these trails, and it seems that the book is not too far off the mark. I was thinking of the OME hard srpings and matching shocke.

But I wondered, how high does 35" give one, so that is why I asked the questions. I guess I ned some more research about how high I really need to be at.

Having 35in tyres does not mean all of a sudden you can drive up a trail that states you need 35in tyres to go up... Its all about the driver, and if the track really warrents 35in tyres, its going to be one heck of a track. Having said that I've put my KJ on 31's up tracks that people said you need 33in minimum and diff locks and long arm suspenion, and seen the guys with all that fail, when I made it. Big tyres and bigs lifts are only part of the picture, learn how to drive your particular 4x4 and you'll be surpised what you CAN do.

cmohr

Rant and Rave over.

OH and PS, I do agree with the other guys, maybe, IF the JK Unlimited HAD been out back in 2004, I "may" have gotten one of those, but, it wasn't so I didn't , and although sometimes I do wish I had a bigger vehicle, I still LOVE my KJ.

Your nuts if you want to do Independace,Patriot,or Liberty trails in a KJ,it will get destroyed. These are the type of trails where you may get body/powertrain damge, they are trails YOU WILL get body/powertrain damage. You need massive amounts of flex and zero care for your vehicle to do those trails.

Take a look at those trails in the links above and look at the pics  .

I'm all for saying/proving the KJ is as good as any other Jeep but I'm not out to destroy my KJ either,it's no fun doing a trail where the possibility is near 100% that you will destroy your vehicle.

:( :( hmm. I am not trying to destroy or prove anything. Hmm... thanks for the links. Maybe I need another way for the pic's.

Jeepin' by Al can do a 8" Lift with a similar set-up to mine, I opted to stay at 6" due to gearing etc as the higher you go other components have to be improved along with it. With 8" you could fit 35's may need some cutting to go wheeling with them?

OK my ranting is over so to answer the question first asked by DJBassman
The trails you mentioned are like TJKJ said, very unforgiving, so you need to build a rig for that purpose only, and haul it out to the trails more than likely. Sounds like you want a rig you can drive every day but also go on some of the harder trails ( with someone else along hopefully) and get great shots. So you have to think is it worth it for a full on trial rig or what do I really want. Maybe the best deal for you is to build yours to handle most of the trails and then get real freindly with those people who have the out of site rigs and tag along taking pictures of them along with the other great shots you will get.

Let me say this with the "prove it" and "body damage" and "get there" stuff
I have been out on trails that were "OK for stock" then it rains
and the hills are so slick that on wrong move and you are in the hole and if you are lucky on your wheels and can be pulled out

I have wheeled several places where I was not the "least capable rig" in the group but was at or just above the ability of my rig and the people who were in over their head wanted out
The problem with "wanting out" is that the group is going forward ,you want to go back you are on your own, and that is way worse than going forward
I have seen almost new rigs get body damage to the point the owners were crying and wanting to turn back
"you knew that you were going on a harder trail with this group and you knew that the chances of B/D were good
you said that you thought it would be fine you have a (enter rig here) with (enter mods here) and that you could make it
hell we all can make it but at the cost of how much body damage"

My point is the same as what other have said
The size of your rig matters very little it is how it is modified and how well you drive it.
If we are breaking up into groups by rig I just hold out until the end and duck in with the 33's + 1 locker group
I run 31's but have more clearance than most of the rigs on 33's ,I have 2 lockers and dont mind body damage
If you dont mind body damage then even trails like the ones 33's + 1 locker can be done in a KJ with 31's and 1 locker
but you will take damage to m it is just a part of wheelin

oh and for the record I would NOT run those trails posted in the links in my rig as is
now if I had the same rig with 2" more lift ,long arms, 33's, 4.56's I would for sure ,with a group that knows them

Anybody that has run those trails would laugh at you showing up with 33" tires on.

That happens all the time
I show up with 31's to ride trails rated 3-4 out of 5
heck I have been on trips when the only time we saw a 3 was on our way to a 4 so I dont see the issue

like I said before keep your tires on the high spots and as many of them down as you can and you will be just fine
