| Post subject: | NEED HELP WITH MY CV BOOT PROBLEM |
Well this is my situation: Iv'e replaced my CV boot 3x now and i cant keep forking out $250 every 10,000 miles. I drive a lot about 70 miles or more a day so i get a lot of use. I love my lift and wheels and tires, but I cant keep putting money into these stupid boots. The first 2x i replaced it i just used a factory boot which lasted a little over 10,000 miles each. But the last one I replaced my shop where i get all the work done thought it would be a better idea to put a much softer rubber after market boot on it. This boot only had 3 ribs in it so it wouldn't have as much friction hampering it. But now i keep finding grease on the outside of it and around the fender, but cannot find any sort of hole or rip or anything. So i have a few options: 1) HOPE ONE OF U CAN HELP ME ON WHAT TO DO 2) TAKE OFF FRANKENLIFT AND TIRES, GET WHAT MONEY I CAN 3) SELL THE JEEP ADN GET A TURBOED FAST CAR! i would prefer to not take off the lift cuz i hate none lifted libertys now when i compare them to mine. I just wanna get this resolved. I also dont want to sell it but if it comes to it i just might... please help me... this is becoming a money pit. |

What seems to be tearing, ripping whatever to make the boots go bad or I guess just loose grease? How are you attaching them? 75,000 miles on mine and no problems so wondering why you are having issues |

the shop that puts them on attatches them the normal? way.... i know that when the factory ones were ripping it was due to the friction around the boot since it was smashed with all the ribs in it. now this one has not torn yet i just keep finding axle grease around it. |

That would mean the boot clamps are not tight enough, very common problem when replacing CV boots. The OEM clamps are welded on and very tight and it is next to impossible to get aftermarket ones as tight with the crappy clamps that are out there.Best best is to get replacement CV shafts with the welded boot clamps, both sides would be less then $200 and much cheaper then just having the boots replaced.
To help prevent the boots from wearing like yours is to wash then often, all the dirt and junk that gets on the boots act as sandpaper and DO NOT use any type of silicone spray or grease since that only attracts dirt and junk making it worse. |

Yea I am finding the same problem with my KJ. I noticed that after replacing my cv's a few times that my CV angle is too high. I need to either remove the lift for a lil while or finally break out my CC and buy the abr bumpber to weigh down the front. |

For me taking the lift off is not an option. I just bought a made in china piece of doo doo axle from advanced auto parts for $69 a few weeks back. It lasted about 100ft in 4wd before it started making all kinds of noise. I just ordered a high quality r/f from raxles.com. Paid $175 or so, cant remember. A new one from jeep is like $250 if i remeber correctly. I'll let you know this weekend how it is. Should be here 9/19. Oh yeah and raxles provides you with a prepaid packaging slip to send the core back. I've purchased raxles axles in the past for my turbo talons. Nothing but high quality and great service. The guys name i dealt with is Marty and he is more than willing to help out. I will be demanding a refund from advanced auto for selling me junk. |

Have you tried to figure out why the boot is cracking and what's causing it? once you do that then you can take it from there. but I will tell you that replacement boots (after market) will not hold up. I have 30,000 on my franki with ome hd's and still good. |

the problem is the frankenlift is to big for the liberty. PERIOD ive been told by a ton of people the reason for the failure is the constant friction between the ribs due to the high angle of the CV joint... the dirt off the road and the small pebbles work in between the ribs and due to the friction they act like sandpaper... this is unsolveable for as all i know..... like i said before im all ears for suggestions |

kkohne10 wrote: the problem is the frankenlift is to big for the liberty. PERIOD The Frankinlift is not to tall for the KJ,there are hundreds(if not thousands) of KJ's running the Frankinlift with no issues.Do you possibly have an extra clevis lift in the front? If so remove that only and you'll be fine. Also mud, dirt, and rocks should never be in the cleats of the CV boots, even in a unlifted KJ,washing the undercarriage at least once every two weeks will go a long ways.Oh clean all the grease off the outside of those CV boots ASAP since that attracts junk that will ruin your CV boots.I have been running 3.75" of lift(more then a Frankinlift) and never had a problem with my CV boots.

The problem with the dirt and pebbles was mentioned as a reason when you do not clean/wash after mudding etc. Mine is as high as the Frankenlift and after almost 80,000 miles not one problem with the CVs / boots still all stock and yes its been offroad many times on rocks and through mud NOT SAYING you are wrong but seems there has to be another problem somewhere possibly. WHOOPS TJKJ BEAT ME TO IT |

thanks for the replies first of all... second i dont have any sort of means of lift other than the frankenlift... and third is i wash my kj every weekend cleaning the cv boots beacuse i have recently been finding the grease around it... and ive been cleaning them usualy anyway... fourth i hardly ever do any off roading with it what so ever... yeah a trail ride at MT. Hood once every blue moon... catch my drift???? i just dont understand ha=ow no body else has this problem... especially when their angles are even more extreme... so i know that u al have said im crazy for saying its becasue of the frankenlift.. but i could us e some answers and suggestions rather than criticizim... this is my DD and i cant keep doing this crap with the CV boot |

First I don't think anyone is really criticizing you at all, in the first post you stated "I hope you can help me out " which is what we have been trying to do. Offer suggestions etc as to what may or may not be the problem. 99% of us on here use the Liberty daily so we understand that its your DD and are getting upset with replacing the CV boots, I wouldn't have over 110,000 on mine if it wasn't a DD! Questions..... Is where the grease has been coming out the same place/area each time? Have you noticed anything on or around that area on your jeep that may contribute to the torn/leaking boot ( besides the lift) anything loose, hanging down etc. If it was mine I would examine everything very closely even turning the wheels back and forth to see if anything at all comes in contact with the boot , jacking up one side then the other, trying to see if there is extra binding somewhere when you flex it one way or the other. It may in fact be something to do with the lift but to say thats positively what it is and that everyone should be having the same problem and not many if any are then ??????? I know none of the above may help but it's where I would start to look Tom |
