| Post subject: | Difficult to get transfer case into 4 Lo? |
Undoubtedly another Newb question. I have a 2002 Libby Limited Auto: 2 High, 4 Part time, 4 Full time Neutral and 4 Lo on the Tx case. I don't think it's ever been in 4Lo in it's life. Only climbing it's done is on curbs. That's gonna change. First of all, what is the designation for this Tx case? Second of all, why is it SO difficult to shift into 4 Lo? I come to a complete stop, select neutral on the transmission, go from 2 High to part and full time 4wd no trouble, but get stuck at full time 4wd drive unless I give the lever a decent pull from 2 High (I'm an industrial mechanic by trade) in which case it will shift (continuous pressure) all the way to 4Lo. Once in 4 Lo it's a fight to get back to Neutral on the Tx case. What gives? I've lubed the cable, improved somewhat but not what I was hoping for. I quickly glanced over the manual, but to be honest I don't know which tx case is mine, so which instruction set do I read? One did say to give a firm continuous pull, and that the tx does not have synchro's which would explain some of the issue. |

First it needs to get used ,trust me my TJ had never seen 4wd for the first 3 years of it's life now it is as loose as a.... try going to 4wd modes while rolling SLOWLY in Neutral this helps a bunch try doing this in a grass field for a while just going from 2wd to each of the 4wd modes and once there pushing the gas hard ,trying to burn out this should free it up some also you nave a NP242 transfer case |

Welcome to the group. Here's my proceedure 1) 5MPH or there about. no more than 10 2) Shift Transmission to N, foot off gas 3) Shift T-case to N, Pause briefly 4) Shift from T-case N to 4 low, requires a bit of force when new. 5) shift transmission back into D, 2 or 1 good luck |

Simply.............. 1-put tranny in "N",stopped or rolling at 2-3 mph 2-yank the t-case lever back and to the right(or left I can't remember),yank real hard and in one motion. 3-shift tranny back into gear and go Mine goes into 4low real easy. |

I discovered mine would shift easily as well once I learned to angle left into "n" then into 4-lo. |

As others have said, rolling slowly while shifting (about 3 mph) helps. In fact my owner's manual states to use this method. Mine was pretty stiff as well going into 4 Lo initially as I believe the first owner never used it. |
