More paint fetishes

I got my WARN Receiver Shackle Bracket the other day. What type of paint should I use to paint this? Will it bond well to the metal? I've seen a few of you (IncCumbusMike and TJKJ2002) paint your receiver and shackle. Thanks.

They always show a red shackle pin in their pictures, but mine didn’t come painted :cry:

Powdercoating is probably best. Any paint will probably just scratch right off when you use it.

yes no matter what you put on it if you use it it will get scratched up some , mines painted with dark grey RUST-OLEUM Hammered , seems to stay on pretty good and easy to touch up, matter of fact (almost) everything underneath of mine is painted with it even the springs :wink:

Ballpeen pounding.....LOL! J/K Hammered paint, when applied, looks like the thing was hit with a hammer a bunch of times. It actually looks good.

I would not waste the time to paint the receiver. It will get tore up a lot. Perhaps some primer to cut down on the hitch and receiver bonding from rust if you keep it in there for a long time w/o removing.

I painted my shackle and screw bolt with primer then gold paint. It has held up well but I didn't do a very good job of painting it in the first place. After I looked closely at the can of black primer (after the gold paint had been applied), I realized it was just black paint.

spraay paint is what I did too, just b/c when it does get all scratched up I can re-coat it easily and quickly

don't over think this. just hit it with your favorite rattle can paint and touch it up when needed. Geez, you're not building a piano! :lol:

I used Plasti Dip on mine. The rubber coating helps keep them from clanking so much when I am driving and it has held up really well so far. I have had them coated for over a year and have not had to re-coat yet. I used a shallow pan and the liquid kind so that I could dip rather than spray it on.

Interesting, how much did that cost and where did you get it?

I bought it at Home Depot a couple of years ago to coat the handles of a bunch of my dad's tools. The can is 14.5 oz and I think I paid about $10 for it. The rough cast surface of the shackles is ideal for it to bond to (doesn't stay on smooth surfaces very well at all). It's available in 4 or 5 different colors. The spray on version is available all over but it doesn't put as thick a layer on as dipping does. You can put some petroleum jelly on any surface that you don't want coated (like the threads inside the shackle).

i dont think any paint would adhere very well to any galvanic coating.

But like everyone else has said you can rattle can it and touch it up later.

But the plasticoat idea is a great one.

I have the dipping and spray-on rubber coating can. I may have to give it a try once the gold paint looks bad.

Just for the record I did not paint mine,painting hides stress cracks and that can be a bad thing.
