Post subject:  Air Intake

Ok ive been looking at the K&N cold air intake, I got a buddy whos really into cars and knows quite a bit, he did say it would help improve horse and mpg.

But i would love opinions from peeps that ahve used it or used something similar or any recommendations.

I did find one thread sorta on this topic but it didnt answer my naggin questions or curiousity.

Thanks for the help

I have had four different setups on mine over the past 100,000 miles and the best mileage / seat of the pants feeling I got was from the stock box, good filter and a 3 inch hose running out to the grill
K&N sounded good and made noise but thats about it and also it is bad for the sensors , will gum them up,
Plus any of the CIA will suck more hot air from the engine bay.
I even made a insulated box for mine and had only air from the grill area coming in but still better with the stock box.

For me a good Amsoil filter, hose to the grill and be done with it

Finally! A use for a K&N intake!! It will improve my Horse...... my horse has been kinda lagging these days....Image

As mentioned above, a decent free flowing air filter (that actually filters, not like the K&N) in the stock box w/ an added cold air source to it will work great. It will keep underhood heat out of the incoming air and still allow the decent water fording characteristics of the factory intake to function as designed.

I would agree. The stock setup with a good filter is your best setup. The open elements will suck more hot air than a sealed box. Just get a good drop in filter and be done with it Amsoil makes quality filters or you could get a K&N drop in filter. Hope this helps

Thanks for the replies ill look into those filters.. Also got any pics on how you ran a hose to the front grill..

And on a side note What if i fabbed some fiberglass air intakes on the side that might work?

I'm working on an intake mod using ABS pipe elbows instead of the flexible downspout.
I have already fitted it together, and it doesn't look like an add on. I have fitted the end that goes into my airbox with a threaded plug so that I can seal it while off-roading or it is too wet out. Now I need to determine the best way to permanently attach and seal it.

I'll post pictures, a parts list and a how-to in the fabrication section when I get the time to install it.

I finished my install on christmas eve. The parts that I used are all 2" ABS street elbows as follows:

1 - 90 degree elbow
3 - 45 degree elbows
3 - 22.5 degree elbows
1 - female threaded coupling
1 - threaded plug
ABS cement
Black RTV silicone

I first removed the grill and the airbox. After determining the best fit I assembled the 90, 45's and a 22.5 elbows to form an "s" to come out of the side of the air box and go around the radiator support post. It should look like this when assembled:

Using a 2 1/2" hole saw, cut a hole in the side of the airbox:

Also cut a hole in the rubber behind the grill just below the headlight for the pipe to go through. The second 22.5 elbow goes through here into the "s" pipe. Make sure to aim it forward like this:
Image

Reinstall the airbox and fit the pipe into it so that the last 22.5 elbow can fit on it to direct the air up toward the filter. Then install the female coupling to be able to cap it off in wet conditions.:

Once it is all installed, make sure to seal around the new intake and the box with the silicone to keep any unwanted water out. Reinstall the grill and it should look like this when it is finished:

I really like this set up because it is hardly noticable and almost looks factory under the hood.

Fantastic thats easy for me lol my dad owns a plumbing shop i can get my ABS free lol Im going to do it this weekend, I think i will add some screen to cover the pipe to minamize the dirt and rock from getting in, ill do a fairly thick meshed screen so i still get good airflow

I have a 3 inch flexable dryer vent and no screen or anything , just fastened right to the grill and never have anything in there, no small birds or anything  mine goes right in alongside the stock location more direct route than the one above

If you did still want a K&N filter, I have a 6x9 cone and the rusty's adaptor that I can't use anymore due to the snork.

Post subject:  air intake fab.

I was thinking about doing the cold air intake myself, but looking at the price of that K&N system ( out of this galaxy high), and how it's made. I was going to fab my own... But I really like the idea of keeping the box, and adding the plumbing to front of the grill. very good fab job I must say, plus the deal about the dryer vent keeping the debir out is great. Thanks for all your ideas. It just saved me heap of coins... :D

And w/ the right air filter (Amsoil Eaa201) it will flow well and actually filter the incoming air.
