Well here I am, a couple of hundred miles into my frankenlift with a total of 80,000 on the odometer. This last weekend I went and did a little mild to moderate offroading in a nearby wash. Well now when I'm in 4WD I here this metal clanking sound that seems to be coming from the drivers side front end. When I take it out of 4WD and put it into 2WD it continues for a few revolutions of the tire and then there's no noise. This was while I was still offroad. I got back onto the street and drove home and there is no more noise. I drove into my driveway and put it in 4WD again just to check. As soon as the tire started to turn there was the clanking sound again. I put it back in 2WD and no sound. Is it possible for the CV's to only make noise in 4WD when they are about to fail, or should I be hearing that in 2WD as well?

I have a bad r/f cv that only makes noise in 4wd. Makes all kinds of clanking when turning. Hopefully will get it swapped out this friday.

Well that's what I was afraid of. Mine sure does make a lot more noise while turning. Man I wonder how often this is gonna happen, because it could get expensive if the next one goes out in the same time frame. Anybody know what happens if the CV just decides to snap one day while going down the road?

Based on my experience of driving with a toasted CV shaft for about 15,000 miles, that probably isn't going to happen. If it does, your wheel isn't going to fall off or anything. Might do some internal damage to the diff, not sure. I changed both CV's out right before I put my Frankenlift in, along with right and left wheel bearings. At 80,000 miles and in a Jeep that sees off road use...yeah, you should be expecting your stockers to be barking. Just replace them and you'll be good for awhile. Not a big job at all if you did the lift yourself.

I've only had one CV go out on me while "driving down the road" but it was on an Eagle Summit. Basically though, the bearings just fell out of it and it wouldn't go any more. Since you'll be using the rear wheels for power on the road, I don't think you'd have much trouble if it goes while driving on the road. Now, if you're on a trail and need 4wd, you might have some trouble.

On a side note, I'll send ya my half-shafts for the cost of shipping, if you want them.

My main concern would be the fact that the entire front end is still 'live' up to the t-case - the half-shafts, diff and front driveshaft are all turning even in 2WD. If one of the front CVs lets go I'd be worried about damage to the front diff. Now if we had locking hubs in our Jeeps I'd be less concerned. Just my two cents...

if you only have 'a couple of hundred miles into my frankenlift ' -

I'd be double checking all nuts/bolts in the front end - something might have been tightened and not torqued. - Even the wheel alignment cams, also look for anything that might be hitting/rubbing that shouldn't be.

One other thing to think about, you had 80,000 miles of running at stock and below stock heighth ( since I am sure the stock suspension settled over 80,000 miles) Then you raised it 3 inches or so causing the CVs to run at a competely different new angle , so maybe they were wore some already and now with the extra flex its causing some noise, just another possibility to check on

Thanks that's very nice of you, but I'm thinking about getting the jeepinbyal ones with 3/8ths shaved off, or at least some brand new stock ones so I might not have worry about them for a while.

Good idea. I've loosened and retightened the sway bar and an upper ball joint that had some slack in it. I didn't do anything else yet. I did put a stripe with a paint marker on every nut I tightened when I did my install. No stripe moved yet.

a long time ago my drivers cv did the same thing just like yours.
I had the cv replaced and the problem was gone. this was before i frankenlifted it.
Like tom said, due to the sag in the stock susp, and now with the lift, the angle went from stock specs to an angle where the cv wold be finished off real quick.

Problem:

-Doesnt do it in 2wd..

-Does it in 4wd.

-Sounds like its coming from the front drivers side..

Solution:

Check the front driveshaft :)

My front driveshaft had a torn boot. Have to replace entire driveshaft.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't even think about it being the front driveshaft. I'll have to inspect that tommorow since I'll be pulling duty all night.

Since we are on the topic, I've found that my front ds boot near the t-case is ripped. I'm a nub on cars though but I believe I read it basically just bolts right now, keyword basically. I was planning on removing it this weekend but I'm pretty sure I've been driving on it ripped for quite some time have I caused any other damage besides the ds?

Since you're not even sure the DS itself is damaged, I doubt it. Some have tried repairing the boot with glues and tapes, replacing the grease, etc. but at least one that I know of hasn't had success with that. Might just come down to making sure you get any bad particles cleaned out before refilling and sealing, though. I'd give mine to ya but, I'm pretty sure it's damaged after I took it apart, not realizing how easy it really was to get it out.   Live and learn I guess.

I think mine just gave out. Mine's been making noise for a long time now, but last night, when I was pulling into a parking lot, it started making a loud clunking noise as I drove. A steady beat with the speed. Spepd up, it was clunking faster. As I drove further, it basically went away but still a sensation there.

Time to get the JBA shaved CV's I guess.

well I just went and bought 2 new cv axel assemblies from NAPA. I'll try and put them in this week so I can start off fresh on both sides. $195 for both with my military discount. I hope they are of decent quality.

um...? I'm not sure if you can't read my above post, but here it goes again. $195 for left and right one. Brand new, not remanufactured. If you're asking because it seems a bit cheap, I thought the same thing. Some of these places online try to sell you just one at that price or close to it.
