Post subject:  tow hook install

i finally found some used tow hooks but they didnt come with hardware .... i was looking at the install spot and the holes are not threaded like the ones for the hitch in the rear. it looked like a nut has to go on the back of the bolt but there real is no place to put your hand in there to secure it while screwing it in. any help would be awesome. trying to get these on before the jeep jamboree in a week!!!! didnt see any "how to" thread on this.

you need to find the special "M" bolts that come with these. Try a dealer but don't count on them. Somebody here might have a part #.

ok but how do you get a nut to secure on the back of that? does the bumper have to come off? does anyone have the mounting hardware??

if you have an 05 you won't need to remove anything other than cut out the plastic notch in the bumper. Those M bolts thread in 1 hole and then back out the other, hold the tow hook in place and finger on the nuts. then the fun begins. A ratchet with a long extension and swivel worked great for me.

complete instructions come with ALL the parts in a NEW set!

BTW, did you get the single bolts too? I believe there are 3 points of contact per side. 1 straight bolt and 1 M bolt each side.

I just took the front skin off, used two bolts, nuts & washers and then put the skin back on. Didn't need the M bolts at all.

2 bolts on a 3 hole mount? sound like you are not getting the full potential of the hooks. I am sure others will post on this with more info.

When I installed the front tow hooks on the front of my sister's '03 KJ I didn't have to remove anything. It was pretty simple.

I used a universal in the back & wrench on the front bolts, was a real knuckle buster but it worked. I didn't remove anything to get them on.

The problem is that once installed, the legs of the m-bolts draw together so when you take them off, the threads get pretty chewed up. I have a set if you want them (just pay shipping) but, like I said, the threads may not be any good. Can't say I'd really recommend running used ones after seeing what mine looked like after I got them off.

What I'd suggest is just taking the bumper skin off, take the crush caps off, take a look at the install instructions for a Detours backbone, and run a backing plate through the subframe, drill a fourth hole and run straight bolts through the hooks and backing plate. If that makes sense.... It would probably just about double the strength of the hook mounting points.

Best I could get with a camera phone on my lunch break. The end without the nut has the worst spot of all four threads. It's the inside part you can kind of see it here:

Sorry, I meant I used 2 bolts instead of the M-bolt. I did used the bolt & clip in the third spot. I have a total of 3 bolts holfing the hooks on.
