Anyone had issues with the electric fan not kicking on? Out in the woods today I kept overheating. I found the fan wasnt kicking on. I tapped on the motor and it kicke don and spun slowly, so I beat it with the hammer and it started working.
The fan hasnt been under water or coated in mud so I dont think its related to offroading.

Anyone else had any issues???

No issues for me, but you may want to order the Mopar OEM mechanical fan anyway. The mechanical fan comes factory on the KJ for towing and is recommended for off-roading.

I had my electric fan go out on the kj. As soon as i noticed it overheating i shut off the engine and waited for it to cool down. The temp guage never went up - don't know if i trust it now. I was in the middle of traffic but still waited because i know from past vehicles that overheating a vehicle can kill the engine. If you suspect your fan is faulty replace it ASAP because if you don't you may overheat the engine possibly blowing a head gasket or warping the cylinder head and it will never be the same again. Also, if you turn on the AC your fan should come on. If it doesn't either the fan or the fan relay is faulty.

"now with the 2003 jeeps you need to check the 40amp under hood fuse first off. then check the fan motor. then you need to check the fan relay(under the front pass side light...oh and the whole front end has to come apart to get to it) with the relay when you disconnect it the under side of the connector should tell you the pin #'s (1-4) 1 is a ground, 2 is the signal from the pcm(ground signal) and 3 is the power to the fan motor and 4 is the 40amp fused power to the relay. now the pcm sends a gound signal to pin 2 to activate the relay. leaving the relay connected if you supply ground to this pin with the key in the on the fan should kick on. if not then the issus is with the fan motor or relay. if they do kick on it has a short in the wiring or a bad pcm."

i had issues just as you describe last time i was out wheelin'. We got into some pretty deep soupy mud that i had to spray out of the radiator. Since i've come home with it, 2 months now, not a single problem. Had my mechanic check everything last week when in for service and he said absolutely nothing wrong. Chalked it up to water/mud in the fan motor.

i'll be wheelin' this weekend @ Badlands and will see how it does.

The fan relay is about 10" under the battery and is fairly easy to get to.The updated version has a larger heatsink to help with cooling it since high heat tends to make the realy go bad.Below is a pic of the relay on my '02.

Mine is an 07, I swapped the fan relay with another relay that is in the power box and nothing changed.

Yesterday it stopped working again and the jeep over heated I let it cool down and started it back up and the fan kicked on again.

Neither times I had this issue was the fan coated in water/mud in anyway. I got into mud later on in the day yseterday but it kept on working.

It has been dirty before so it may have dried mud in there getting between the contacts, I'll pull it tommorrow and clean it out realyl good and see what happens, next step will be a new fan.

I have a problem with my AC condenser fan. My Jeep will overheat with the AC on and only at highway speeds. I can drive around town with the AC on but not on the highway.....strange I think.

The bummer is the dealer has to take off the grill to do the repair and the grill will not come off with the ARB bumper on (I tried believe me). The dealer wants $500 to remove the bumper (the fan is under warranty). I installed the bumper, but removal is more complex that the installation.

The dealer says the failure was cause be water and much getting in there. It's very watery and muck on the trails here so I guess they could be right.

But enough about my problems, I don't think we're talking about the same part.

I had an over heating problem with mine but only when it was raining out. It ended up the connector on top of the fan was shorting out. I cut it off and used a couple of stay-con connectors and haven't had a problem yet.

 That's a big disadvantage for going with the ARB bumper. I guess it never crossed my mind that you wouldn't be able to take off your grill. :? And that's the bumper I was leaning towards. :x

I may try that. I lost a taillight in a mud hole that came back on afte rI unplugged an replugged it. maybe be havign seal issues on the connectors.

I think when you take off the fan you will find alot of dirt and mud on the commutator and brushes. I had a cracked brush, had to sand it down and reseat it on the commutator. Haven't had any trouble since.

Feel the wires and see if they are hot. Mine was so hot I couldn't keep my hand on them. When I took the connector apart you could see where it was starting to melt from arcing.

Post subject:  FYI

I replaced my stock electric fan for the heavy duty fan kit. I will sell my stock electric fan to anyone who may want it. It only has 13,000 miles on the stock fan when we pulled it this weekend. It might be a good back up for those of you who just have an electric fan. They are very expensive to replace brand new.

not hard at all to remove the ARB, 500 bucks to do it?? That is stupid, takes less time than it does to brew a pot of coffee, mines been off 4 or 5 times by myself no help so don't worry about the removal

when i tirn my ac on the fan comes on like it should and works good, i never noticed my jeeps temp gauge go above half. but when its sitting idling, shouldnt the fan come on by itself? or does it have to be a hot day for it to come on by itself( without the ac on) ?

Yes, it should come on on its own but Ive seen my engine get up as high as 230F before it kicked on. The temp gauge read normal... Which is why its called an idiot gauge.

I agree that $500 was excessive that's why I left and returned it with the bumper removed. As far as doing it by myself, you're a better man than I. I called a friend to help me lift it off and put it back on again.
