Just out of curiosity... I know there is no pre-built snorkles for the KJ, but has anyone ever seen a snorkle that doesn't look like a crappy piece of black plastic sticking out of the vehicle? I mean, is there anything that is not very obvious? |

There is a pre-built snorkel kit for the KJ.Your not going to get away from the "crappy piece of plastic sticking out of the vehicle" look unless you custom make your own metal snorkel.

Theres not really any other options for placement or anything is there? I'm still talking in theory here, but, lets say we wanted something different than that pipe up the side. What are our options? Off the top of my head, a absolutly crazy idea is to somehow have a piece of pipe go from your air intake under the jeep, than follow the length, than up through the body of the jeep, than out the roof... This way you can have something mounted on the roof (where I would like it). I know this is absolutely crazy talk here, or is it? |

yep that is the only snorkel we can get, at it is only available through Dirk over at www.DPGoffroad.com and you would probably need to call him to order it or you could email him for it, but last time I checked they were about $350 and I don’t know if that included shipping or not |

You could make a snorkel that comes out of the hood somehow. Or maybe have it run on the inside of the fender under the hood towards the window and up the passenger side over the window. you would lose a little visibility but not too much and would have to cut some of the hood away. |

Highly unlikely, they are functional and simplistic as designed. |

they might be functional and simplistic... but I don't want to put one on my Jeep. I like to keep it relativly clean looking, there are some things I just don't like the look of. Since this isn't a dedicated off road beast, looks still matters. So, any problems with my idea other than how complicated it is? |

Having a "roof scoop" style snorkel causes a whole set of new problems. Rood scoops are primarily used on rally cars where getting above the dust is the primary concern. If it is a sealed snorkel system, any water that comes up over the hood and/or rain water will be naturally deflected over the windshield and straight into the snorkel... not good. There is a reason why snorkel heads are spaced away from the body. If you don't like the way they look, my guess would be that you really don't need one. Just my useless opinion... |

I think your idea might even look worse than the plastic one on the fender. So how do you explain this plastic tube going up through the passenger compartment & out the roof? That tube would look very out of place running up through the passenger compartment. There is no way you were thinking of trying to hide such a tube so it was not visible inside, was there? If you are considering looks over functionality as it is not really an off-roader, why do you need such an inlet cluttering up the design anyway? |

running it up through the body??? lots of problems like sealing it from underneath where no water could enter the cab, sealing the roof so no water could leak in there, where would you run it underneath so that it would not get caught when out wheeling, lots of things could go wrong doing it that way I think |

I agree they do look kind of cheap, but man...those Aussies have some darn good looking KJ's!!!!! I thikn to run up through body and roof like Tom stated, you are giving more areas for problems. You would probably have to run under body then up through interior and out roof??? One little crack and you will be sucking in the water!!! You would have to in essence, run the tube straight back through firewall into cab....I woulnd wthink that would look good at all, even worse than the current one made. |

Another thing to consider is air flow rate, make the piping too long and too small and you will restrict airflow, and starve the engine of air. The "Airflow" snorkel has been specifically designed to allow more airflow than the engine needs so it is able to breath better than standard, add to that the "Air Ram " effect of the inlet hat at speed it actually creates positive pressure in the piping and that makes for a little more "punch" from the engine. The intake Hat, is also designed to ceate a vortex inside to separate water in heavey rain so only air gets to go down the snorkle to the filter box... The positioning of the intake hat being up and away from the body means that dust pulled along the surface of the vehicle is not collected by the intake so as to supply cleaner, fresher cold air into the engine.... Its all very tricky, not just a bit of plastic up the side of the car. The other bonus of this particular inlet hat is that if you are in particularly nasty conditions, big water, heaps of mud, dust, you can simply loosen the hat and face it backwards to avoid all the muck. |

We were discussing this same thing over on jkj, there is a manifacturor in Spain that makes very nice snorkels:
They are willing to do one for the KJ if we order at least 3...but...they want around $800 for it.. Now the idea of leading a pipe under the fender is more to my liking, that way the snorkel looks a bit like this:

The AirFlow snorkel is more offroadish and falls into the same lines as snorkels for other Jeeps. I don't think that it's excessive, in fact you can't even see it much of the time it's working.
