| Post subject: | Alignment problem |
Installed a Rusty's 2.5" budget lift w/clevis 8 mos. ago. Had it aligned and it drove perfect for 5 mos. until I saved up enough to swap street tires for 245/75 Cooper STT's. I immediately noticed a hard pull to the left, so I took it back and had them align it again. It got better, but still drifted to the left. I had them move tires around to rule out radial pull. They have been rotated twice, moved around some more, alignment re-checked. The tire dealer won't rule out radial pull, but won't offer me a new set of tires either. I have seen the readout on their alignment machine, it looks right. Could their machine be wrong? It doesn't seem like radial pull, given that it pulls the same direction and same amount no matter which tire is where. It drove straight before the Coopers, and I don't want to shell out the dough for a third alignment in less than a year to yet another shop. I have tried to just live with it, but it gets annoying and dangerous going straight over 45mph. Any help? |

have you checked the calipers yet, one maybe hanging some, that will cause a pull as well |

Could be balljoint play, too, but it'd be more of a wander. So have they checked the front end? upper/lower balljoints? anything? Is this a pull that if you let go of the wheel, the Jeep will pull, or if you hold the wheel straight does it drift? |

So I lifted her up, checked for pay in ball joints, excessive brake drag on one side - seems fine. I took it to the shop that I got the first alignment from and had them scratching their heads for a while, until the desk guy asked what pressure I was running. I told him that the shop I got the tires from had put them at 30, which I thought was low ( I was running 35). He told me that E rated tires needed more than 50. We pumped them up to 55psi and off I went. No pull anymore, only a little vibration (feels like they're a little out of balance) and that is from the way they wore down while under-inflated. I knew that E rated tires could hold more pressure, but no one told me that I needed to run that much more. The shop that sold me the tires should have known this. I feel like they owe me something for screwing up a $900 set of tires. The fifth one has a plug in the sidewall now from a nail that I'm sure got through the 10 plies b/c it was so under-inflated. I only bought the fifth one so that I could make them last longer. Anyway, I would rather blame it on them. Earning my newbie status... |
