| Post subject: | 42RLE is DEAD!!! Codes: P0711 P0713 P0734 |
Well, it happened. On Friday I noticed a slip between the 3-4 upshift. KJ is 2003 with 87k well cared for miles (tranny serviced regularly, etc). Brought it into Jeep and they read the three codes: P0711 P0713 P0734 So, I was hoping to keep the KJ another year or so. I've been eyeing the new Rubi Unlimiteds, but I HATE to be in this position. Few questions: - anyone got a used one sitting around? - is this it? dead? - anyone want a KJ CHEAP! It's got TONS of cool stuff on it. I'm seriously considering parting it out! Thoughts? Ideas? |

sorry to hear about it I always hate it when I break something, especially when its not a cheap or easy fix. let me know if you decide to part it out I need a t-case skid and a couple other parts. hope you can get it fixed cheaply or easily |

Well, I got the KJ back and I must say, it's driving great! It's almost normal. Sometimes a bit lazy into 4th. And if I lock out OD, then it's completely fine. I wonder how long it would hold up this way? I'll bring it in to my local shop for his opinion too. I also got a call after posting on line for used tranny's. One in TX with 49k on the clock for $925 delivered with converter. My local shop will put new seals in and install it for $450. So under $1500 all in for a used tranny with half the miles of mine. Interesting idea. It comes with a 4 month warranty. I could then either trade it in on a Rubi Unlimited, sell it, or just keep driving it. Anyone else with the 42 tranny have a fault code like this that turned out to not be internal clutch failure? |

P0713 - Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Circuit High Input P0734 - Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio Maybe you need to replace a sensor? Or maybe it's more. I would really look into it before doing a trans swap. I'm learning this myself this past week. http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=37005 My local 'trusted' trans shop in town wanted to do a complete tear-down and rebuild for approx. $2700. The part that I needed to replace was just under $80. Definitely worth checking out and doing some homework. Good luck! i'd have to agree with yellowcote. i'd change the temp sensor first and see where that takes you. |

I got the KJ back last night and it was shifting ok and driving ok for the most part, with just a bit of a longer shift into 4th. So this morning it occurred to me that the dealership simply checked the codes and didn't touch the tranny. NOT EVEN THE FLUID! So I checked the fluid this morning and it looked and smelled fine, BUT WAS ABOUT 1/2 QT LOW!!! I just added it and it immediately shifts better. No delay or slipping into 4th at all. There is a bit if a clunk in that shift, but I need to drive it more to see if that the usual clunk or if anything feels damaged. I also realized that if it slipped or slowly shifted into 4th, that will give the code: P0734 - Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio. And if it was low, the fluid certainly may have gotten hot more easily. Amateur move to not check the fluid first. But I'm beginning to think this was a major false alarm!!! Especially since I changed the fluid every 30k, and it's only got 87k on the clock. Other thoughts? |

Why was it a 1/2 quart low? Did you check it in N while it was warm? Did the other two codes go away? |

Don't know why it was low, but it's running great now! I'll keep an eye on it and check the codes in a few days. |

Not to hijack the post but what does a bad Transmission Fluid Temp Sensor look like? Also are they expensive to replace? |
