| Post subject: | NEED HELP...CV swap problem |
Hi guys! It's been awhile for me, school and work and no money have kept me away from doing much more than driving with my Liberty. Anyways, I tore a CV boot so now I am swapping CVs. I already had a replacement lying around since I've been through this before on the driver's side, but this time my passenger side CV needs to be replaced. I have the whole front end taken apart, and the CV assembly is out of the jeep and lying on the garage floor. Trouble is, the inner axle shaft (that goes into the center of the differential) is stuck in the CV female end. I have sprayed wd40 in there and pulled as hard as I can, but the snap ring won't budge. Any ideas? |

yellocoyote wrote: That happened with mine too. Literally had to beat the snot out of it, but it did come out. It just needs persuasion. Anchor one end to something that doesn't move (I used a chain to a pole that's in the yard), and have someone pull on the other end while you take a BFH to the half shaft.
That will do it, jjst have to "bang it" a few times should knock it loose |

OK guys, I banged on a it quite a bit, after putting it in a vise and hitting the CV shell with a BFH about a hundred times, I broke it free. Crushed most of the splines on the small side, and the old snap ring is stuck in the old CV shell. I managed to procure a "new" used snap ring from the local dealership, actually from another vehicle, but I think it will work. I got the axle shaft back in the differential housing, but now that I am trying to reconnect the passenger side CV with the center shaft part, and I don't know how much clearance there is supposed to be. I need to know how far in it is supposed to go before it is fully "seated." I have a little space between the metal casing of the CV assembly and where axle housing actually is. Sine the metal casing that is part of the CV assembly spins, I wouldn't think it is supposed to sit flush because there would be metal on metal contact, but I don't really know. Any ideas? |

After you get the knuckle and rotor on, put the axle nut on and torque it to 100 ft. lbs. and it will finish seating the axle if there is any gap left....Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm in the process of going though the whole gammit with pulling the entire housing out for the third time in 5 yrs. |

I had the same issue when I swapped out my passenger side CV. There was a gap left that looked like it may have been too big but there was nothing I could do about it. I just put everything back together and I've been driving it like that ever since. The gap doesn't seem to have closed any so I'm guessing that's how it's supposed to be. |

If you do not have the correct C-clip the inner axle will not fully seat or stay in place correctly, spend the $5 and get the right clip.

I have a few of each laying around,the inner/outer sides use different C-clips. |
