Post subject:  Again!!

Seems to happen every winter. My rear pinion seal on the front diff starts to leak. Happened in the feb'06 took it to the dealer to fix. This fall [Oct-ish '08] my rear pinion seal on my rear diff started to leak, no drops, just a "wet diff". Yesterday, crawled underneath the Jeep just to look it over, found my rear pinion seal is leaking on my front diff. You can tell b/c the pinion area is wet and there are drops on the garage floor (which smells like gear oil). Its not a puddle, jut a couple of drops. Would it be safe to drive? Or will it leak more/faster when the Jeep (driveshaft) moves?? Can I wait until it warms up (March/Apr) to fix it. I would rather fix it myself than take it somewhere. Sorry...rant over!!

I wouldn't worry about it, just pull the fill plug periodicly and stick your finger in to check the level. If it starts getting low, just add some.

part of normal wear and tear, lots of moving parts on a 4 WD so more things to leak, wear out, go bad....

.like KJ04 stated just keep checking it. We'll have warm weather again in 6 months

Need to get that front bumper installed first! Might take you up on that offer, need a lot of things installed....pinion seals, new springs, jba arms, outer tie rod ends, skinks, lights, gauges....but still saving up, going to do everything at once.

You better not be getting tired of working on black jeeps... We have LOTS of work to do on the coolest black non SFA KJ East of the Mississippi!!!!

:D

Back to the Topic.... What type of oil are you using... The guy who does my oil said that synthetics like to find places to come out of more than a conventional oil...

My front pinion seal has been leaking for over a year. Ive not noticed a drop in fluid in the diff but its slung oil all over the place. Probably wont worry with it unless it gets worse.

If tjkj posts he will say that you should get it fixed. Says dirt and crap can get in the bearings.

Its not a real hard job to replace them from what Ive read but if you dont torque the bolt just right for the yoke when putting it back on you can ruin the bearings.

Usually use Mobil 1 or Valvoline 75w90 full synthetic. Front and rear.

Anyone know why the FSM says you have to remove the brakes to get to the rear pinion seal on the front diff?? Doesn't really make sense.

That is so when the "unknowing" ask the "knowing" why the labor rate is so high they can point that out and say see what all I have to do?

I thought every pinion seal was a "wet" seal... Espeically after a couple of years in the winter weather.

Thats so you can get a torque reading before you remove the pinion nut. Like I said, youve got to make sure you torque that thing just right.

You remove the brakes and check to see how much torque its takes to turn the pinion. Once you put the pinion back on and torque it to a given torque, you check to see how much torque it takes to, ince again, turn the pinion. If its too little you tighten the pinion nut more(and check it again), too much and you may of over torqued the nut already and screwed everything up. Gotta buy a new Jeep and give me your old one if you get it too tight.

No but you should get it fixed, just adding a new seal will not fix it though. You will need to put a "ready-sleave" on the yoke to give the seal a new surface to ride on or replace the yoke to get it to stop leaking.
