| Post subject: | Should i be worried |
Changed out the Differential cover from stock to a Rockcrusher one (My first mod). After fumbling around with the cover (it's kinda heavy when your in a weird angle) i got it all bolted on. Couldn't help wishing i had a lift When i got to adding the Amsoil i got from JJsKJ I could never get ALL the juice from the bottles there was a wee bit at the bottom of the bottle ( i combined the 3 bottle leftovers to get as much as i could into the diff). Also i used a pump hose and a bit got stuck in there. To make a long story longer SHOULD I BE WORRIED? I test drove it around the parking lot for about 3 mins and it seemed fine and ill check it tommorow for leaks. Almost forgot i couldn't get the drain plug flush( but i got real close) And i can't tighten it anymore unless it gets on a lift and i get a cheater bar, this should not be a problem right? PS: The cover wasn't as easy as i thought, did it with no jackstands and i have a 20 gallon tank ( i believe 15 is the normal size, so less space?) Once the rockcrusher went on i had about 2 inches between it and the gastank so i had to break out the wrenches and ditch the ratchet The original cover was on their good i couldnt knock it off with a rubber mallet and i wacked that thing good several times had to take all bolts out but 1 and carefully use a flathead screwdriver. But if it doesn't leak ill be happy if it does i'll be sad and have to go to the stealership and get them to reseal it since it's my daily driver. (crosses fingers) |

the plug is higher for lifted vehicles which changes the differential angle which with stock cover would lower capacity, so you'd typically still put the 2.2 qts in it if you have a piece of rubber hose stuck in there ya might wanna get that out unless you mean some fluid got stuck in there? the drain plug on them doesn't really sit very flush anyway so not a big deal there and if you are worried about it sealing good invest in a lubelocker gasket for it if you want , quick easy fix for not having to deal with RTV anymore , the lubelockers are like 10 bucks , and supposivly last for many applications |

sounds like you have plenty of fluid in there. I wouldn't think that cover would hold much more than a 1/2 qt more of fluid at the normal fill level and filling it to the fill plug opening is probably more fluid than it needs in this application. |

If you put over 2.5 quarts in there you should be fine. If the cover sticks out further then 2 quarts will not fill it up as high, doesnt matter where the drain plug is. If you increase volume you must put more oil in there to reach the same height. Also, the smallest tank that was ever put on a liberty was 18.5. 2004's got 19.5 and yours has a 20 gallon. It would be hard to notice an increase in the size of the tank, it doesnt take much to hold 2 extra gallons. I wouldnt get the plugs in the cover insanely tight. If they are tapered threads you could harm the cover. If it were aluminum you could crack it in half but since its not.... Just remember the tcase is aluminum if you ever tighten those plugs.. |

One tip that I'd like to share is get two more bolts about 2 inches long with the same threads as the diff cover bolts. Then cut the heads off, file or grind the top of the bolt shaft so there are not sharp edges and use these for guides when you change your diff fluid. Just screw these "guide studs" into two of the holes near the top corners (finger tight) and you can slide the diff cover onto these and "slide it home". Then throw bolts in the remaining holes. Remove the studs and put the remaining two bolts in and tighten as recommended. This is particularly handy to keep the RTV from getting rubbed off or getting all over the place. Or if your cover is heavy (as in your case). Just thought I would share in case someone doesn't already know this. |

The extra capacity is for when the pinion is tilted for a lifted application. One thing to watch out for is after driving for a long period, the oil gets hot and expands. You could end up puking excess gear oil out through the diff breather hose. |
