 Post subject: Fender Flares
PostPosted: Tue Apr 07, 2009 2:01 am
My front fender flares on both sides got ripped off on Sunday. I was driving down a muddy road and fenders got packed with sticky mud. And i guess my tires rubbing against the mud pulled the flares off. My drivers side flare was already a little loose but it got pulled right off so it was resting on the tire. The passenger side was never loose but is now, still on but hanging down lower.

I pulled the drivers side completely out to take a look because I had been thinking of pulling the flares off to get more clearance anyway. I guess now's my chance. I'm wondering if more clearance could be had around the pinch weld areas. Is it possible or is that whole area part of the frame or something? I was thinking of using a BFH. Would it throw alignment of door or something off if i just bashed that area in a bit?

There is no frame -- the pinch weld is where 2 of the unibody pieces are welded together

so you can't just cut it off - it'll lose strength at the joint - someone did cut it off and reweld a plate across the body pieces.

I'm not sure you could beat it in without causing the body pieces to separate (most likely in a crack that will allow water in)

i see. This is actually the 2nd time my drivers side fell off. First time was when i was stock. Not sure what caused it before but this time it is mud. I 'm thinking i will just bed line the wheel well and leave out the inner fender liner. I can still put on the outer fender flare to make it street legal but i may cut some of it off near where tires could rub. The other thing i was thinking was to make a fender flare out of fiberglass. That would be cool but a lot of work.

that would be alot of cat hair :? i hate workin with putty and fiberglass, makes me throw alot of durn-it tools

You'd probably be alright to shave your flares, perhaps figuring out a better way for them to attach to the fender than the stock clips would help

i was doodling up some fiberglass fenders, basically same as the ones already on the kj, but the same width as the rear of the fender all the way to the bumper, and around 1" higher on a slight downward slope. I'm not a big fan of the flattie look on kj's.

what i would really like to do is get some of those bushwacker flares. But what are the chances you can make some fit on the kj, since they don't make any for the kj.

The rears maybe, the fronts would not work at all since the KJ narrows in the front.

I would just about do anything to find some aftermarket deeper fender flares.

I First lost my flares when i disco'd my swaybar. I used some sheet metal to cover the washer pump/bottle and i drilled in some clips to hold the abs/esp wires. I left out the liners and clipped the fender flares back on. When i disco the swaybar i now remove the flares.

Tonight (a few hours ago) I lost my passenger front due to mud. IT was at least a foot and 1/2 deep of thick goopy mud (good fun). I cant find it anywhere!

I'd hate to buy a new flair and paint it up etc and just loose em again. BAH!
