Post subject:  Front drive shaft squeel

Hi All!
For a few months my driveshaft has been backing a high pitched squeel/tinging/ringing noise as I drive. I got underneath when it was parked and was able to make the noice happen if I hit the driveshaft. I have to hit it pretty hard with my palm to get the noise to happen but it's there. Sounds like a dust cover or something is rattling a bit (had this noise on my samurai and it was the dust cover being loose on the front output of the transfercase). The last couple weeks, I have noticed when slowly taking off from a light a little grinding/bumping coming from what feels like the front. - like something is slightly binding up. It is very slight, and I have to be accelerating very slowly.

I am curious if this is a bad ujoint in the shaft? Or possibly a bearing? I didn't really look to hard as to how the front driveshaft connects to the front diff. Do the front driveshafts have 2 Ujoints? Or 1? Also, there was no really play noticed if I tried to 'press' the driveshaft with both hands, and also when I wiggle it.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Jonathan

Bet you a nickel to a dollar your rear boot is gone and the CV is toast. pull it out and take a look at it, takes ten minutes maybe at most. If your sure its the front more than likely you'll have to rebuild/replace it.
Check the rear u joints also as they will make a squaking sound, they will appear not to be loose as well cause they are rusted solid replaced mine around 55,000 miles I think it was

Thanks for the reply!
I am positive it's the front. Noise goes completely away once I engage 4wd, and comes back almost immediatly after I go back into 2wd. I checked the rear shaft to see if it also made the noice, and couldn't get it to happen with the rear. It's definetely the front shaft. (also, I'm 90% sure the grinding is coming from the front)

What is involved with rebuilding the front shaft? What needs rebuilding?

Your wallet is involved.. It will need a rebuild once you buy a new shaft since you cant rebuild them..

Leave the old driveshaft under your pillow

And the CV fairy will come to you while you sleep and leave a nice rebuilt one in its place, WITH A QUARTER!

the local dts was able to find a conversion plate for both ends of my drive shaft turning it into a u joint style. the reason for this is because mine got ripped from a stick and i don't want to do this again. but i told him to keep all measurements cause i might have some friends that would want one if there is not a vibration problem. cost is $400
