Post subject:  Mud Bog Next Weekend, any suggestions?

I am planning on putting the Liberty in the Virgil Stampede Mud Bog this year and I would appreciate any advice for getting the Jeep through this.

Some of last years 31" tire class
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYEy_2MvBVs

Currently I am running the 245/75/R16 BFG AT/KO's with about 1/2 the tread left :( I know they suck in mud, almost got my self stuck a few weeks back. 5spd standard trans, 3.7l 6cyl. So I am looking for any advice that can be given,

Should I air down to 20-25psi like I do normaly in the mud?

Should I be running as light as possible?, as heavy as possible?

Should I even try to get it in 2nd before hitting the mud, or just stick to 1st?

i'd say 2nd gear and hold it at about 2500 and if it starts slowin edge it up in 500 rpm increments

i've never been a fan of first gear in soupy mud

how's 3rd in Lo lock do with the 5 speed KJ's?

3rd in lo in my cheyenne was absolutely sick but thats 3rd out of a 4 speed

3rd in 4hi and it would walk on water

Thanks, around here when I am running through mud its shallow thick/hard because of the clay content, when I hit deep spots/puddles I already have a descent amount of momentum that carry's me through, and if I don't air down I may as well not even have a steering wheel because it's like driving on a skating rink. This will be completely different starting from a stand still a few feet away, and a much longer stretch of soup.

I think if I started in low I'd be crawling (I think that's what the first jeep did), I'm thinking I need to enter with as much momentum as possible, and hope to at least keep it moving forward.

Anybody else? Air down? low weight? high weight?

I was Just at a Mud bog over the weekend and from what I saw the trucks that made it through the 35's and under class were light weight, lifted about 5or6 inches low air in tires and heavy on the pedal. Oh, and a locker always helps. My Kj on the other hand made it through 10 to 12 feet and sank like an anchor in the ocean. I was running 245/75/16 bf ATs with 25psi OME Mediums ranchos all around but my problem was I didn't pull the ABS fuse to Kill the ESP. It killed my momentum! Everyone thought I had lockers front and back because I was spinning all four tires once ESP kick on

the little wrangler didn't do so well in that one. Those trucks seem to power through that fairly well though.

I'm no expert on mud as i've always avoided it where i could. But i have driven in it enough to have some experience. Now that i have MT tires i notice i can go places where i could not before. Having said that i think the type of mud you are running in makes all the difference. The kind of mud we have over here is very sticky in places because of high clay content and it would not be uncommon to see boggers looking like slicks. That video looks like high water content, slippery, wet mud. For your KJ, use momentum, lots of wheel speed and low tire pressures to float on top. If the mud is high clay content and very sticky make sure you have good tow hooks. The first day of mud driving this year and i tore off both my front fenders from the mud. Now they are bolted on. 8)

To bad you couldn't borrow some mud tires.

That's pretty much about as far as I expect to get  Especially since our set ups are about the same. You suggest pulling the ABS fuse though?

And ya I need MT's bad, but I do too much highway driving. I have been giving serious consideration to picking up 5 steel rims and MT's for offroad, and keep the stock alloys and AT's for on road, but I have a kid on the way so buying new Jeep toys some how won't fly as a necessity in my wife's eyes right now.

1st get some MT's on,Interco Boggers or TSL's preferred for mud bogs.Air down to about 24psi in the front and about 18 in the rear, trust me it will help greatly in keeping you going forward and not sideways.Put in 4low and use 3-4 gear to keep RPM's up around 4000-5000rpms where your peak torque is.Wheel speed is your friend in mud, keeps the tires cleaner.

ESP applies the brake on the wheel that is spinning to force the other side to spin. Not possible to spin all 4 tires in 4wd on a ESP equipped vehicle without LSD's or lockers.
ESP applies the brake on the wheel that is spinning to force the other side to spin. Not possible to spin all 4 tires in 4wd on a ESP equipped vehicle without LSD's or lockers.
Well then thats odd because a couple of people including myself have seen my KJ do just that. After ESP drops down the throttle from loss of traction. which seems like an endless cycle of vroom----vrooom-----vroom. It settles at a underpowered engine sound which is the ESP applying brakes individually and of course limiting your throttle. At this point however it would appear that all 4 tires spin. I'm just going with what my eyes are seeing.

Now children play nice. My opinion is that you talk to ThunderBirdJunkie and get the new set of Goodyear dura tracs that are in his shop and tare some #### up!!! I want a kick back TBJ but i do love these tires. I have taken several trips and at highway speeds they are great

i disagree

fast forward to 1:15 and watch ESP in all it's glory 8) you can clearly see both my front wheels spinning and my front diff is as open as wal-mart. (also if you watch the rest of the video a few rubicons didnt make that hill on the first try  ) dont care what you read on paper.. in real life ESP is almost as good as lockers just not as reliable since you dont know what it's doing under you. but yes.. all 4 of my wheels have been cranking with open diffs and i've had several witnesses to tell me that.. it's not a guess.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhggnINDdzw (go to 1:15)

for you mud bog i'd leave the fuses alone.. and when in 4lo it shuts off the throttle control in ESP but leaves the traction aiding... i would let it be and then use TJKJ's power plan with 3/4 gear for tire cleaning/peak power rpms
