| Post subject: | Another problem!!(klankin sound in 4wd)-Front Driveshaft |
On top of all the other issues my kj and I have been having... I went out to do a lil four wheelin in town today, just over a few hills in a feild behind some local businesses. When I started to notice a klanking sound coming from the front of the vehicle. I am not sure what this could possibly be. I only went up and over a couple small hills that were all dirt w/ only small dips. I am not sure what it could be?? If I sped up, the klanking would speed up. It kinda seemed like it was worse when i turned the wheel as well. So, I drove home in two wheel drive and tried it again once I got home. Made the same sound but seemed a little louder Thanks for all your help. Hopefully one day I can safely hit the trail?? |

I take it the roads are covered in snow for you to drive home in 4pt? Or were you on a gravel road? If you drive around in 4pt a lot there are tons of things that could of been worn out. Clicking is often times a CV joint. Did you check the boot on the front drive shaft(both of them)? |

No snow, the carwash is about a mile from the house with a couple turns. I just wanted to see if it would continue to make the noise so I could better identify.. I will check these boots out a little bit better this afternoon. I have been reading all these posts and kinda got a good idea to look for.. I was hoping it's not the transfer case |

Yeah, check the boot right at the transfer case on the drive shaft. That seems to be the one that goes bad and lets in junk. Dont be driving on black top in 4pt anymore. |

Make sure you check the rear boot on the front drive shaft. When mine was starting to go it didn't make noise until it got warmed up. just a suggestion. |

This sounds like a problem I had very often when I was lifted. My Drivers side CV at the sheel hub would break at about every 3-5k miles. That clunking noise you are hearing is most likely your CV half shaft. And when you turn the wheel you seem to hear it more. That's what mine did all the time! Another CV half shaft to the KJ parts god |

That's what mine did all the time! Another CV half shaft to the KJ parts god I looked at it a little more today, the sound, i would describe as a "Tink"ing sound. It doesn't have a good consistancy. For example, if I drive it around the parking lot in 4wd pt, I can go straight and take turns without it happening.. Then it will happen, then it won't. It seems like it does not matter whether it's warm or not. I would think that something is loose, but I cannot find anything loose?? |

You pretty much described to a T what my front drive shaft was sounding like before it roasted completely. That would be my guess. |

could it be the sound only comes --part time? like when under stress and the wheels are tripped to turn, cv then? |

turned out to be the front driveshaft... Whats the best option in replacing this? I seen there is a few ppl that have done u-joint style front driveshafts. Is that the best way to go? Whats the most affordable? I just had to replace a p/s pump, water pump and my funds are runnin low |

Most economical option, if it is indeed the front driveshaft, is to have the rear joint replaced by a driveshaft shop. Most do it for about $150. Cheaper in the long run than dropping $100 on a used one. |

for sure... get a drive shaft shop to change out the T-case connection to a U-joint style. get rid of that small CV joint there. its crap. and will blow that boot repeatedly when offroading. there is no slop there, no play. that small boot ruin a new shaft over and over. the drive shaft shop and U-joint approach will be cheaper than a new shaft from chrysler to begin with. it will be a better connection and less prone to problems overall. if your going to offroad your jeep, get away from that stock DS connection. switch it over. you will save gobbs of money and hassle. imo. and you'll have peace of mind to offroad your jeep at will until you find the next weak link. LMAO |
