The WARN M8000 is a tried and true workhorse, about $500-$600.I'd recommend the WARN 9500XP,very powerful and fast.If you want a winch that will last and work even if you don't use it very often get a WARN,money well spent.Better then buying a $300 dollar china made one and have it not work when you need it the most.

X2, but if you need a budget winch the only one I would consider would be the XRC8 for 300 bones. But the Warn would kick it's butt any day.

I agree about the Warn being best. I have the XRC8, sold by Smittybilt. I have used it, it's not fast but it seems very strong. I don't have any complaints at all.

The new MileMaker winches use "MiFi" controls so you never hear the dreaded "Click.... Click..... No pull". It also has variable speed control so you can go high speed or slow. The controller also has LED status indicators the tell you power, direction and thermal issues. It's also 100% waterproof which came in handy in the swamps of FL.

It's pretty much the bleeding edge of bad-assedness and pimpination. It's what I rock and is a big part of what makes my KJ the sexual tyrannosaurus it has become. You could by a Warn, spend a lot of dough and you'll have a great winch. You could also buy yesterday's newspaper.... but why?

An explanation and demo video of MiFi. You'll have to fast forward to the MiFi demo.

Here's an old test form back in the day. The only winch not to fail was the Mile Marker

http://parts.grade.de/bergen/milemarker/weston.htm

Here's an educational video and head to head test with Mile Marker, Super Winch and Ramsey. Warn did the worst in this test if I remember correctly

I will admit that Warn had much better windshield decals.

For years Milemarker was the winch of choice on military vehicles... but not the one you were suggesting... it was because they were hydraulic winches, not electric. Slow, but powerful and more or less bulletproof.
Were I to get a Milemarker winch, it would be a hydraulic one in the 10,000 to 12,000 pound range.
Warn's electric winches have proven themselves reliable for years. I believe there is a melt-down test-to-destruction test of winches on the trail at Moab Jeeper online magazine.

The general rule of thumb is to get a winch that is 1.5 times in power the weight of your vehicle. That said, I like to got a minimum of 2x the weight of the vehicle. So, I plan on either a 9000 or 9500 pound Warn for my CRD. Synthetic rope all the way with an aluminum hause fair lead.

There you have it.

There are other winch manufacturers Ramsey (mostly east coast) Mile Marker (started in the winch market with hydrolic winches) and Super Winch (mostly over seas)

I like Warn because theyre Pacific Northwest based company.

i have a smittybuilt XRC10 and it has been nothing but outstanding... i've winched myself and others through some nasty stuff and it drastically out performed my expectation. It has a pretty fast pull speed and is strong as an ox. i bought mine for $380 and was able to pick it up so didnt even pay shipping. Warn does make good winches.. and you get what you pay for. however i'm a poor college student and figured any winch is better than none... if you can hack out the $$ go for warn. if your kinda on a budget i'd strongly recommend the XRC10 (10,000lb) winch.

ps. with a unibodied liberty always try to winch STRAIGHT on to what your pulling.. unibodies are very weak side to side and it would not be hard to sway your unibody one way or another with a 10,000 lb (or even 8000lb) force.

I'm running a Warn XD9000i.Went with Warn for one reason RELIABILITY.My uncle has a Milemarker and won't use it to winch any rig but his own.It overheats quickly.I'll use mine for anything anytime.Works great for helping to cut down trees, dragging my 20 and 40 foot storage containers, and oh yea getting un stuck(me and any other wheeler).

Question to synthetic rope guys.WHY?
What's a few pounds when you throw on heavy bumpers, skids, rails, and other heavy mods?
Can you use a snatch block with rope to double pull power? If so guess you better be within a few feet of a tree(not allways likely). Not trying to stir the pot but just don't see what all the hype is about.
I'll take 120 feet and some weight over 50' and shed a few pounds.

Weight’s not the only reason for using rope. I’m still not sure if it’s worth the extra money, but it does have many advantages, from what I’ve read (never used it, only wire rope). Most of all, IIRC, it doesn’t snap back if it breaks, but just falls down (is that true, rope guys? still hard for me to believe). It’s easier to handle, it doesn’t kink like wire does and it doesn’t get that “memory” curvature that makes wire hard to handle after you’ve had it spooled for a couple years. There’s no reason I know of why it has to be shorter (is it bigger circum than wire?). It works the same in snatch blocks. One disadvantage, if you run it over hard edges without a shield, it can get unpleasantly “fuzzy” – but then, wire used the same way can get in worse condition when isolated strands break which makes it “sharp” enough to chew up a pair of leather gloves.

its quite a bit less weight and its safer, if your wire rope snaps its going to go flying the synthetic rope will pretty much just fall to the ground. You can get the synthetic rope up to 125', maybe even longer but thats the longest I have seen that I remember.

Much safer then then steel cable. My WARN 9500XP came with 100' of 5/16" steel cable and I replaced it with 100' of 3/8" syn rope with twice the working load capicity as the steel cable, still have the same reach with a safer and stronger product.Plus you can repair a syn rope on the trail and keep on going with maybe at most a 5' reduction in line length, you break a steel cable at the 50' mark you just lost 50' of cable to use.For the weight issue it is lighter to offset the other heavy stuff that needs to be heavy to be strong.

I'd go with a Warn.... I don't know anything about the SmiittyBuilt XR Series, but I have seen many many Milemarkers returned with cracked casings. I work in a Truck Parts warehouse so I see these alot. I'm not hating just stating my View, Oh yeah and almost all reputable companies selling Warn winches carry the replacement parts which I have never actually seen be shipped out..... Ok one time a guy bought a new motor end plate for a M8000. In it's defense it was because of a shipping incident.

Good points guys.
Didn't think you could get it that long, and never thought of being able to tie it back together if it breaks.

Now I see what all th hype's about.
