| Post subject: | MY JEEP'S FALLING APART |
Driving into work yesterday my jeep started making some interesting sounds at highway speeds like there was a hole in the exhaust. And then the camshaft is squealing at takeoff from stoplights so i stopped by the dealership which was 3 blocks down from work to get the 50xxx service done and figure out what was wrong. They've had it a day and a half and are still diagnosing issues with it. Mechanic said this so far: 1. The hum you hear at highway speeds is possibly your driveshaft being out of balance and then they looked at the angle of the shaft being that im lifted and said it was at 4 degrees and spec is 3. So they're going to try and salvage the driveshaft. They think it threw a weight...not sure yet! Potentially be under warr. if not $690. HOW COULD A DRIVESHAFT NOT BE COVERED UNDER DRIVETRAIN WARR??? 2. My right front axle is questionable...not sure whats going on with that...i think its a bearing they dont know yet. 3. Camshaft is said to be culprit of squealing on takeoff. That is covered under warr. all i have to pay is $100 deductible. AND on top of ALL THIS i NEED new tires....somebody shoot me now! Anyone else have multiple things go out at once?? Any insight as to what i should do at this point? Did not give me a loaner...having to use my bro's car...miss my jeep already I HATE HAVING TO CALL TO SEE WHATS GOING ON WITH MY VEHICLE |

woah woah woah i think you're mechanic is tryin to fill his or her pocket or is just grasping at straws... 1. this hum? you hear it with the windows up or down? if mostly when down, and the hum goes away abruptly at like 20 mph it's probably your tires, rotate them front to back and see if the hum changes, if it does it's your tires 2. drop your front skid if you have to and get a good close look at those front axles, inspect the boots, i'd ask for more information on this questionable aspect, and tell them that it's questionable that you feel like payin for anything if it's Questionable! 3. Camshaft squeeling on takeoff.. request to see all replaced parts if ya end up getting new parts for a 100 dollar deduct, you're pretty much win win anyway additional question, is JBA the only place that makes slip yoke deletes for our driveshafts? |

the hum that i speak of happens at speeds above 45 mph and only happens when my foot is on the gas...if i lift off it goes away but if i go back on the hum starts back up again... and i will make sure they diagnose a true problem before anything is replaced on my right front axle because the boot was fine last time i looked at it 2 weeks ago i trust this jeep dealership more than any other around my area...drive 30 miles out of the way to go to this one when there's one in the town i live in....i really hope he's not giving me the ol' 1 2 |

i seem to be building up a list of both wants and needs to get done over the summer before i move outer tie rod ends control arm bushings upper ball joints(going to al's upper arms install a hitch find and replace the cracked hose causing a leak in the evap system to get rid of the engine light buy 2 more tires to make my AT set complete add rear lighting to the roof somehow get clear turn signals due for new front struts if i go that far i might convince the wife if i have enough afterwards to upgrade to OME coils to get some extra lift and make me a set of rock rails along with checking and changing anyfluids that i havent yet since i got the jeep, and pretty much giving it a tune up ... so much for saving up over the summer but at least i wont have to worry about much after i move and dont have a place to do things. |

HOW COULD A DRIVESHAFT NOT BE COVERED UNDER DRIVETRAIN WARR??? that 4 degrees is caster. Do not worry about caster, it is NOT going to wear out drivetrain parts. ThunderbirdJunkie, himself, has never ever heard a CV axle make a hum. It is probably A: your tires from being cupped from lack of rotation, or B: your wheel bearing. Do you happen to have an ABS light on? Quote: 2. My right front axle is questionable...not sure whats going on with that...i think its a bearing they dont know yet. 3. Camshaft is said to be culprit of squealing on takeoff. That is covered under warr. all i have to pay is $100 deductible. Camshafts do not squeal. it is likely the tensioner pulley. Quote: AND on top of ALL THIS i NEED new tires....somebody shoot me now! Make you a HELL of a deal on some Wrangler DuraTracs;) Quote: Anyone else have multiple things go out at once?? Things don't go out "at once". It is a slow buildup, and you neglected to heed the warnings your vehicle was giving you. Quote: Any insight as to what i should do at this point? Take it to a real mechanic, not some retard that's going to sling diagnostic parts all day long at your expense. Quote: Did not give me a loaner...having to use my bro's car...miss my jeep already
I HATE HAVING TO CALL TO SEE WHATS GOING ON WITH MY VEHICLE You LIKE this dealership? ThunderbirdJunkie would hate to visit the ones elsewhere around you |

Pretty much sounds like they have a whole load of **** that they want you to buy. A driveshaft if it threw a weight would not hum, it would be vibrating when taking off esp. Never heard a camshaft squealing, trying to salvage the driveshaft......they are too funny and they are hunting for a gullible person to buy into their crap |

RkyMtnKJ wrote: yeah, if they attempt to make me pay cost for a new driveshaft i'll raise hell. Front or rear? If it is a rear shaft the pinion angle will be off due to your lift and can cause vibes and should not be covered by any warranty due to aftermarket parts.

Huh? i thought Magnussen covered that. My understanding is that the stealership must prove the aftermarket modification directly attributed to the fault, else the warranty must cover any warrantied part. In this case i would think that since so many of us are running these lifted without this problem then it would be difficult for the dealer to prove his lift was the cause of said problem. Not arguing TJKJ. Always appreciate knowledgeable feedback and just asking. |

Get this.. You think you got it bad... I just bought my vehicle a little more than 2 months ago. I put on a daystar lift and replaced shocks and struts, plus spent all the money on a set of 5 rims and tires and did a pretty good tune up too boot. And a few odds and ins. But just recently, I have started having cooling leaks from my water pump and top coolant hose. Also, I have a powersteering leak that has been a pain to pinpoint on account of the coolant leaks. There has been an aweful sound coming from my front end and had just found out that it is my front driveshaft is falling apart by the transfer case. On top of it all, I think the p/s leak is effecting my steering cause something don't seem right. And doing my brakes to boot. So, this is gonna cost quite alot of cash. I could have bought new rockrails or a-arms!!! I am plannin to get it all taken care of this weekend. My driveshaft is in the shop, got all the parts and fluids. Spent my entire bonus and feel like its not gonna take care of it all. |

It'll get all of us one day You working with dealerships in NC or Pat Murphy/Advantage Dodge by Durango? |

Sorry for the late reply... Rear end turned out to be fine. No issues there. The high-pitched squeak went away, techs could not replicate sound again. Had the jeep 4 days and told them to forget about it unless it reoccurs. Entire front driveline is so F'ed its not even funny. Replacing bearings from transfercase to right front suspension. The liberty comes from the factory with a misalignment in the front driveshaft (from what he told me) but the lift just accentuates the bind and messes it up. He said some better upper A-arms would help as well as a different front drive shaft with some custom elbow in it. Brakes are on the way out and charge 500 for new rotors and pads...Jeeps rotors are made too thin and only last one cycle. My dad and i will do the brakes ourselves...you can buy a full kit for under 200 OME. All together without break job is around 900. ORIG QUOTE WAS 2000 to fix it all I ALMOST want to take the lift off after this BS... |

I always had that hum exactly on 55 mpg when I lightly put my foot on the gas (when matching the cruising speed, no faster) coming from the rear area, it was never loud enough to bother me, only heard it when radio was off... When I take of from complete stop, there is always a tiny bit hesitation, it never bothered me, you can barely notice it when you floor it anyway. How many miles on your jeep? It sucks I know, when you take the jeep in for ANY problems, the dealers seems to come back with a bag of other problems for you to deal with... It's like going in for sore throat but them letting you know you got athletes foot. |
