What do you guys think of these doors?

Image

I know the guy that made them for his ZJ and he made some for his brother's XJ. I am tempted to get a single driver door and have him make me one and then I'd paint it gloss black to match my jeep. I'd only need or want the one door. What do you guys think?

ThunderbirdJunkie thinks that if you want half doors, you should have gotten a TJ

Half the beauty of the KJ is being able to wheel in isolation with your AC and satellite radio cranked, while you annoy those in CJs, TJs, YJs, and XJs ('cuz their compressor be BROKE) with squeaky brakes :P

However, the doors look cool

There is nothing illegal about them. The seat-belts still work and there are still side mirrors.

I like my AC just as much as the next guy but having all that door removed helps a ton with your ability to navigate large rocks while off roading. I wouldn't get them because of looks, but because they are extremely functional I think.

Depends on what you're doing with your jeep. Still gonna DD it after the sfa? If it was me, I'd love them, but it'd become a pain in the booty hanging the old doors back on every time I wanted windows, or it was about to rain.

They'd be off road only doors, but you are right about the pain it would be to put the regular doors back on. It was a pain after I did my rock rails. My jeep will still be my dd after the sfa.

I love the doors! Looks like your buddy does really nice work. I'd love to be able to do that to my KJ, but I need it for family hauling duties on a consistent basis. As incredibly functional as that would be, it would never pass wifey inspection. :D

If the doors on our KJs were a little easier to hot-swap, I'd definitely get them (or one or whatever). But taking-off/putting-on doors on the KJ isn't easy enough for me to consider it.

But I'd love for you to do it so I could live vicariously!

I know a guy who cut the pins on his XJ doors so they were slide in/out and easy to work with. I don't want to do that, even though it would make things a whole lot easier. It is just one door though.

Maybe you could fab up a plastic/canvas/whatever snap-in window to cover the open area during inclement weather.

I say go for it! I dont even use my AC when Im off-roading, shoot I barely even use it when Im just driving on the road, I just roll the windows down. I do like the canvas cover idea though

I think the canvas window is a great idea.

i feel like a tube door would be better, a lot less work to make, go along with your front/rear bumper, offer even more visibility while offroading, and not break your back putting it on and off. to me it would not be worth the expense or hassle of making that door to lose a window and gain 3 or 4 inches of visibility. plus a tube door with small mirror on it would still be legal and pretty easy to make if you had a tube bender.

I agree about tube being ideal. But with tube doors, it is really hard to cover up all the door jam space that stands out so much when you take the doors off. Also the cut regular doors would be a lot lighter because you could remove all the interior guts of the doors when you cut it up. Also I would not be making the tube or cut panel doors, either way. I don't have to tools or know how to do wither. :? So I'd have to pay to get them done either way.

Good input. Still undecided on what I will eventually do, if anything.

If you're worried about what it looks like why do it at all :?

Because these don't look that bad. I am not sure what a good tube door setup would look like because I haven't seen any good ones on a unibody jeep.

I'd agree with the tube door idea over the posted version. Personally I'd make a full tube door and skin it with vinyl like Wrangler softdoors. That way for DD you have your OEM doors, and when wheeling you have the tubes with as much or little element protection as you need at the moment.

I don't like them.

1. The Doors look lame in those photo's anyway. I mean what's up with cutting the handles off but leaving the useless button knob without a handle?

2.But even if I had liked them, I sure wouldn't only do one door.

3. I fail to see how those doors will help nav against large rocks? What, you'd prefer your elbow / shoulder to take the brunt of rocks?!- The only functional purpose I could imagine would be the lack of forced pressure while you're submerged underwater. Maybe if you were doing African safari's I'd consider something like that - Maybe.

(Btw; AC is for soccer mom's & sissy's).

I dont like them either.. I agree that the tube doors wrapped in canvas might look alot better, but the doors in the pic wouldnt go with the body lines. I dont know what is involved in taking the front doors off, but if there were a way to make them "quick release" ... I like that in my cj5 that I can drive down the road with my foot half out the door. 8)

I kinda like the looks of them.
I wouldn't do that to mine. I already have a TJ, and have no problems with choices... I have full doors, half doors and can go no doors whenever I choose.
If you're looking for options for your vehicle, I suppose those offer you a choice. But I'd want to modify the hinges so you could swap a little easier (TJ hinges anyone?).

I like the idea of it being easier to lean out and see rocks, but my concern would be the dd aspect. Seems like removing and installing the doors would be hard on hardware. It sucks to deal with sagging, misaligned doors, Hell, we have enough problems with the doors sealing already. Maybe save the idea for when it isn't the dd??? My $.02. I do like the concept though.
