interesting, it's a transmission side version of what i spoke to you about awhile back

I haven't seen that particular setup used often

however there is a set of 2WL crawler gears that gives you a 2nd stick for the 231, lets you have a 2WD LO and effectively puts your transfer case in neutral

there's also overdrive adapters (more common) but not available particularly to 231's or 232's that in effect puts another 0.71 gear on your transfer case on the rear of the unit. this allows you to gear your axles much lower than you reasonably normally would, but on the highway you've got a secondary final overdrive on your drivetrain that kicks your finals up by the 0.71

the neat thing about the above particular style of overdrive (OR UNDERDRIVE) is that you can use it in any gear that you choose thus rendering a 5 speed standard into a 10 speed standard, rather similar to having a 2 speed rear end

Other than the internal 2WD Lo crawler set, this (the one you posted) is the only over or underdrive adapter that i've seen for our vehicles without changing transfercases or transmissions

It's basically identicle in the way it works as the AA Rubicrawler. Just with the option of the David 2.72 underdrive and the Goliath 4:1 super low. We had a few discussions about two years ago on the board. Do a search for "Klune" and they should pop up. I'm on the iPhone right now or I would post links, sorry.

A new custom rear drive shaft is needed for that thing to work since it adds about 7" to the drive line. It might be better just to get a new TC like an atlas.

Actually you use the same shifter...it just adds another position to the shifter

Personally, I'm just interested in the guy who owns the KJ. Does anyone know him or is he a member here? I'd like to chat with him.

That article is from 4 wheel drive and SUV. Here is the link to it. Perhaps you could email the mag and they could tell you who's jeep that is.

the new drive shaft for the rear was actually a half inch longer

You do need a shorter Driveshaft with that normally, but they also installed an super short SYE which is why they needed one just over stock size. It's also a bit less in price than an Atlas.

But not near the strength of a Atlas.

It would be a great fit for a KJ owner. 99.99% of KJ drivers don't need an Atlas.

99.99% don't need 4:1 low either,I can hear it now about blowing this breaking that.

I agree with that somewhat. I think quite a few on here could use it. But the vast majority, not so much. Since the price is more affordable, it is a good option though.

As long as they don't expect the D30A to live long. And when all said and done it's not that cheaper then a Atlas, maybe $200-$300 at most.If the time comes the Atlas will fetch a better resale also, actually by alot.Heck a RockTrac would be cheaper to do and you end up with a much stronger t-case then the 231 can ever be.Plus both the Atlas and RockTrac would be a much simpler install, the RockTrac being a super easy install, just bolt it in and get new F/R driveshafts is about it with no modifying.

I didn't say it was ideal or the best, just another option. Options are a good thing.

Rocktrac would be a great option.. especially for the SFA gang. dont get as much strength as the atlas but more so than a stock libby t-case.. and you still have the 4 to 1 low range.. I think that's all you really need. Our rubicon with the rocktrac 35's and a 6 speed crawls slower than you can force yourself to walk haha. not sure you'd even have to change the linkage to inside the jeep if you dont have one of those fancy t-cases with the awd (command trac maybe?). watch video below for a visual to put things in perspective. hard to tell what it really does just by reading numbers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Xs8qUHBxmg

This is me driving our rubicon with 4.10s 6 speed (same one as in my KJ) 35's and a rocktrac. in 4lo first gear. didnt touch the break or the gas. Well gas only once when bumping over a rock, same one the white rubi was stuck on at the beginning of the video, towards the end but you can hear that.
