i just redid the linkage on a 231 saturday, i'd imagine it's just a pressed o-ring isn't it? i don't remember there being a 2 bolt plate that holds the linkage pivot arm for there to be a gasket you're talking about where the pivot arm comes off the transfer case right? |

The t-case shifter shaft does have a seal(not a o-ring) and they are the biggest pain in the rear to replace. You need a special remover/installer tool(works for auto trans shift shaft seals also).I believe the shop time for R&I one of those seals runs from 2-4 hours depending on vehicle. |

find a day or two that you don't need to drive, and take the transfer case off and drop it off to a tranny shop, it'll save you a little bit on the R&R i'd think sorry didn't mean to get your hopes up! |

This a pic of the special tools needed, the black one removes the seal, the silver one installs the seal.
They are rather hard to find. |

you big tease hahahaha Not sure I'd be comfortable taking out the t-case. I can do just about anything from mecanics to electronic repairs but it always takes me a while to decide to go ahead with something if I'm not sure about it. I'll call a few tranny shops just for fun to see how much they charge to change the seal. Thanks again, very much appreciated. |

ok here are more questions: Why so much labour? Is it to remove the tcase itself or actually getting to the seal once the tcase has been removed? Does the tcase have to be opened up or can the seal be R&R from the outside? Thanks again! |

ok but what about the seal itself, can it be replaced from the outside of the tcase? If so then I think I'll tackle it myself, worst case I can drop it somewhere so they can do it. I don't have a choice now, I'm losing ALOT of oil.... Thanks again |

I did it. Re&Re the shifter seal in a an hour and a bit and that includes rubber coating the cross bar and transmission pan. I removed the cross bar under the tcase, lowered the tcase with a jack till I could get to the shifter bracket bolted onto the tcase, removed the bolt with 10mm, pried the seal out with a screw driver, popped the new seal in with a 3/4 socket, put everything back together.... no more leaking. |
